Publisher's summary

The Everfail will rise. His enemies will fall.

Hiral is the Everfail, the weakest person on the flying island of Fallen Reach. He trains harder than any warrior. Studies longer than any scholar.

But all his people are born with magic powered by the sun, flowing through tattoos on their bodies. Despite having enormous energy within, Hiral is the only one who can’t channel it; his hard work is worth nothing.

Until it isn’t.

In a moment of danger, Hiral unlocks an achievement with a special instruction: Access a Dungeon to receive a Class-Specific Reward.

It’s his first—and maybe last—chance for real power. Just one problem: all dungeons lay in the wilderness below the flying islands that humanity lives on, and there lay secrets and dangers that no one has survived.

New powers await, but so do new challenges. If he survives? He could forge his own path to power.

If he fails? Death will be the least of his problems.

Don't miss the next progression fantasy series from J.M Clarke, bestselling author of Mark of the Fool, along with C.J. Thompson. Unlock a weak-to-strong progression into power and a detailed litRPG system with unique classes, skills, dungeons, achievements, survival and evolution. Explore a mysterious world of fallen civilizations, strange monsters and deadly secrets.

If you loved Mark of the Fool you will love this

I really enjoyed the process of the main character growing into his powers, and the benter of the party members was my favourite part

Exceeded my Expectations

Picked this up on a friends recommendation and because I enjoy another series by one of the Authors. Going in I thought it would be a light read that followed along the usual paths. The dungeon bits dragged on a little but the world built is so engrossing the story was hard to put down.

Edited review - a bit of praise added.

Edit -

So I went back and listened to the second half of the book again. When the MC is mostly alone and there is some pressure added the story moves along better. The high number of side characters who are empty shells fuddles the story still but when you and IF you can get past that part (and its a lot) then there is a decent story buried in there.

This book is basic ... so basic.

I like to start with the good so I'll try:

The good:
• The Power system is a tiny bit interesting. Confusing and random but a bit interesting.
• The MC is kind of cool sometimes... but also just milk toast.
• There was a hint of exploring powers and the split function but… then 177 chapters of straight combat ate that up.

The bad:
• The world has existed for .... well since time began, I guess. But he stumbled on new things like he is the only one to ever do anything. Has everyone else just been chilling since... time began? It’s odd. I can accept that maybe something unfolds later that explains all of this but when you write book 1 you don’t want the reader to think its just bad design. You need to foreshadow.
• The side characters are... wow. I hate them. I'm rooting for the generic monsters to win the fights. The narrator reads them all with the exact same voice. I finished the book, and I couldn’t tell you much about any of them. Not what they look like, what makes them cool or different or anything interesting because they are just boring.
• Hiral, the MC, is weak. He doesn’t take charge like a true protagonist should. He is sold as academic and tough but when the rubber meets the road he folds.
• When I say generic monsters, I mean... VERY generic. Like starting zone World of Warcraft for about 90% of the book.
• The author lifts a lot of stuff from D&D and MMOs and ... that could be fine if the rest of the book were more interesting and had more power building scenes for the MC and less of the generic side characters and WAY WAY WAY less fighting.
• The fight scenes are NEVER ENDING. And they are so dang boring. It’s so bad...

You cannot convince me that the author of Mark of the Fool is writing this. I simply don't believe it.

good story bad extras

loved the dungeon crawl and supporting side characters.
but be ready for the angry toddlers extras after every dungeon dive. It would have been amazing without those parts.

this was amazing

this book had me from the start to the finish the only thing I regret is that there isn't more ready to go! the character are well written and have depth that starts to unfold over the journey they take, also did I mention I want the next book yet? lol

not completely through but

I hate it when authors do stuff where they give them something and then they don't end up addressing it like the main character got the one achievement for saving the girl but he never got anything for it

Better than I thought it would be

This series has some potential. Good job! I’ll be picking up the second book. Hopefully a bit more world building in the next.

Unique story and world building

A+ performance, great engaging story. Can’t wait for book 3 (and book 2). Highly recommended if you like LitRPG
