Publisher's summary

There was no passion to break her heart, no love to risk and lose. Marrying her boss, prominent businessman Cormick Grayson, was a very reasonable proposition for a woman who'd been hurt in love before. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. At first. But something wasn't right.

Gray's eyes told her there was more to this than a polite, passionless marriage. But Gray's cool, impersonal distance left Amber wondering about the man she'd married. Amber never imagined she'd be the one demanding more, yearning to feel things she vowed she would never risk again.

Gray always so cool and calm

Their chemistry together was so on point. The banter they had with each or of Gray and Amber.

classic

if you don't mind references to "wifely duty" and "husbandry right" it's a pretty good story. banter between actors/characters feels real. book written in 1986.

Work it OverTime

I have to say that Jayne Ann does better with her mysteries with alchemy and romance series. This was a good book, but fell flat compared to her Scientific/Paranormal books. The steamy romance scenes were great and the story cute, but overall was an ok listen.Narration was very good.

Fun, fun and more fun!

What a feel good book. I like most Jayne Ann Krentz books and this one is no exception.

Basically a good story but definitely out dated.

Gave only four stars for story and overall because it is dated. I loved all things Krentz back in the day as well as her books under her other names. Still get enjoyment out of them today. I particularly enjoyed her Harmony series under a different name and eagerly awaiting the next publication in series!

Love this old favorite!

This is an early Krentz novel, published 1986. The hero is a honorable alpha guy and the heroine a spunky gal. It follows the Friends to More trope with quirky dialogue and some light Proximity-Danger scenes. Recommended to readers who can appreciate reading books written in a different time which carry a slightly different tone. I believe BETWEEN THE LINES has held up well over time. I still love this fairly simple “escape” read.

A 1986 period piece

c1986 There’s some age on this early book from Krentz. Too bad it’s not one of her better reads. I like Gray much better than Amber’s with her lack of intelligence in dealing with her ex, Roarke Kelly.
Amber has worked for Gray for 3 months when he asks Amber to marry him. He knows she’s getting over a relationship but wants to be sure she’s his before she starts noticing or dating others.
The groan worthy and semi cute parts are their banter re western poet Sherbourne Ulysses Twitchell.
McFadden does her narration ok except when her voice moves into the upper ranges on female characters. It takes away from the reading, thus 1 star less.
I borrowed from Audible, yay, but can’t recommend a buy.

Not her best

This was an old story. If I ever see Amy McFadden as the narrator, I won’t buy the book.
