About this listen

There's no place like home....

Kim and Julian Taylor are in the market for their first home, and a visit to the secluded Beacon estate finds them enamored. It's a peculiar home, rather large and in need of some renovations. The price is right, however, and after a tour, they snap the house up without hesitation.

The man who sells them the house has one last detail to share before they sign on the dotted line. The previous owners of the home disappeared under mysterious circumstances nearly eight years ago and have recently been declared dead in absentia. Unperturbed by this fact, Kim and Julian set about making the home their own.

It quickly becomes clear that the two of them are not alone there, however.

This volume contains all four installments of the serialized novel Black Acres: In Absentia, The Borderland, The Amber Light, and In Darkness. It also contains a brief preface by the author.

Ibsen + Hempel = Horror Gold

Ambrose Ibsen is one of my very favorite modern paranormal writers; I'm always super pleased to see a new book published by him! While the 'Black Acres' collection wasn't my favorite by Ibsen, it is well worth listening to the whole thing. Joe Hempel is fabulous, as always, and brings the series to life in an impressive way. If you like ghost stories, bizarre happenings, general shenanigans, and well written/performed content, then this collection is for you.

My New Favorite Author

I finished this book in one day! This is by far the best horror story I’ve come across. What a creepy story! I will definitely be back for more and more. The writing was so well executed by author and reader. I am very impressed and I will be sharing this with all of my horror lovers!

Creepy!

I listened to this book almost completely through, in one sitting.

I am not usually one for horrour, but I did enjoy this. There were parts where my hair was standing up, but what I really don't like are jump scaares. I did not feel the threat of jump scares while listening, which probably added to my liking this. There were a few parts that got so creepy I did have to distract myself a little to not fully focus.

If you are someone who likes really creepy books, I really think you will enjoy this. My husband was surpised I was listening, as I am afraid of my own shadow.

The story was intirguing from the very beginning. I love stories centered on disappearences. I want to figure out why, as I am sure many people do. It kept me hooked and I was not dissappointed in the ending.

Overall, I think it has a compelling plot, some great characters (not necessarily likeable characters,) and perfect for seasoned as well as timid horrour listeners.

Joe Hempel's voice really lended itself to this story. Great choice. He does great voices and a nice speed.

Black Acres

Kim and Julian were looking for their first house when they found the deal of the century, the perfect fixer upper with land in a secluded area, the Beacon House. They get the house below market, move in, and start right in on the renovations. But shortly after they move in strange things start to happen, could this have anything to do with the previous owners disappearance?

This is a great, but creepy, book! This is not the book you want to read (or listen too) home, alone, on a dark and stormy night. The characters are interesting and even if you think you don't like them they are right for the part, it works out. I am not sure how the author kept track of all the loose end and got them all tied up but he did, it was masterful. If you get a chance get the audio, narrator Joe Hempel turns the creep factor up another notch. Hempel is awesome keeping all the characters straight and making the scenes so vivid, it is like you are there actually seeing it live, which in this case I am glad I was not, but still enjoyed the audio very much.

Only thing to beware of is the ending

I read reviews on this book and some of his others. The common theme are the endings. You get so sucked into the book, just for a huge let down. Kind of like how Game of Thrones ended.

A good old ghosty haunted house tale, complete with sensitive young wife and skeptical young husband. Spooooky!

Well I am on the fence on this one

This story was very slow, very standard issue off-the-grid horror. Enough to keep you listening but it is a slow burn. Emphasis on slow. I was going to give this book a worse rating but the ending pulled it all together and was very cool but not sure it was worth it.

Great listen, but ending was kind of blah.

I enjoyed listening to this. The story was great because it seemed to have a real ghostly theme going on but towards the end It felt so fictional. Then the ending just left me all irritated with questions. But I guess overall it wasn’t bad. I wouldn’t say it was a waste of time or anything.
