About this listen

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

For a police diver in Florida, solving a cold-case mystery brings a serial killer out of hiding in a deep, dark thriller by the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Naturalist.

Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit have discovered a van at the bottom of a murky Florida pond. Sealed inside the watery tomb are the bodies of four teenagers who disappeared 30 years ago after leaving a rock concert. To authorities, it looks like a tragic accident. To Sloan, it looks like murder. Every piece of evidence is starting to connect to a string of cold case vanishings throughout Florida. Clue by clue, Sloan navigates the warm, dark waters where natural predators feed, knowing that the most dangerous one is still above the surface - nesting and dormant.

But when a fresh young kill is found in the Everglades, Sloan fears that her investigation has reawakened a monster. How can she catch someone who’s a genius at hiding in plain sight? By acting as prey. The dangerous gambit is working - only too well. She’s being lured into a deception of the madman’s own design. Has Sloan set a trap for a serial killer? Or has he set one for her?

Another good book by Mayne!

This book was a nice recovery from the first book in this series. I didn't think the first book was great, but this one had a fascinating story that leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for book three!

Great Series

Really like this author and series... kind of reminiscent of John D McDonald, with a bit more humor and without the mesogeny of that era.
well researched.

Excellent

This is a great story keeps you very engaged. The narrator was bit annoying in the beginning but she definitely grew on me throughout. I am unsure if it was narration or the main lead having self doubt that annoyed me. But beside the point the story was great.

My type of cop

Sloan is my type of cop. She is driven to rid society of those who pray on the innocent. This story had just the right amount of detail about the crimes and about steps in finding the serial killer.

Sequel Outdoes Initial Entry

The second entry in Andrew Mayne's UIU series is, IMO, better than the first. Rather than a double chase with a rather ordinary McGuffin, this is a straightforward murder mystery -- well, as straightforward as you can get when your protagonist is a scuba diver who has to contend with giant alligators while searching for clues underwater, but then that's what makes it fun.

I still have to deduct a star for structure -- just as the McGuffin is the key to a double chase as in UIU #1, the ability to guess the identity of the killer is the key to a murder mystery. There are plenty of candidates here, but in the end it proved impossible to guess. I guess it's not too much of a problem because this is more about the investigators and their investigation rather than about whodunit.

If the first book left me ambivalent about continuing the series but ultimately willing to give it a shot, this second entry definitely leaves me wanting to listen to more.
