About this listen

Based on many years’ experience counselling bullies and targets, Stella O’Malley offers concrete strategies to empower children and teenagers to deal confidently with bullying and dominant characters.

We can’t always be there to protect our kids as they make their way in the world. What we can do is equip them with the tools they need to ensure they have a positive social experience.

Based on many years’ experience counselling bullies and targets, Stella O’Malley offers concrete strategies to empower children and teenagers to deal confidently with bullying and dominant characters.

She identifies effective ways for families to cope when bullying occurs, including approaching the school authorities, communicating with the bully’s parents and tips to tackle cyberbullying.

Stella’s common-sense approach will help your child, tween or teen to develop their emotional intelligence and will provide relief for families navigating the rapidly changing social environment, both online and in school.

As a parent of young kids, I found this book to be incredibly helpful and will come back to it as a resource. Great combination of clearly explaining the psychology and theory behind bullying, different reasons why kids are targets or bullies, and how not every social or relational conflict is “bullying.” Lots of real life anecdotes that illustrate what people experience as targets, bullies, bystanders (which the author calls “upstanders” to encourage everyone to actively speak up & do something when meanness is overtaking kindness in front of us). Very concrete advice for parents on how to work with (or if needed file complaints with) schools, and how to talk with and guide our kids to foster resilience and self confidence, and avoid, de escalate, or at worst survive and thrive, bullying incidents or patterns. Highly recommend.

Insightful, practical guidance for parents
