About this listen

Count your nights by stars, not shadows. Count your life with smiles, not tears.

1961. After a longtime resident at Nashville’s historic Maxwell House Hotel suffers a debilitating stroke, Audrey Whitfield is tasked with cleaning out the reclusive woman’s room. There, she discovers an elaborate scrapbook filled with memorabilia from the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Love notes on the backs of unmailed postcards inside capture Audrey’s imagination with hints of a forbidden romance . . . and troubling revelations about the disappearance of young women at the exposition. Audrey enlists the help of a handsome hotel guest as she tracks down clues and information about the mysterious “Peaches” and her regrets over one fateful day, nearly sixty-five years earlier.

1897. Outspoken and forward-thinking Priscilla Nichols isn’t willing to settle for just any man. She’s still holding out hope for love when she meets Luca Moretti on the eve of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Charmed by the Italian immigrant’s boldness, Priscilla spends time exploring the wonderous sights of the expo with Luca―until a darkness overshadows the monthslong event. Haunted by a terrible truth, Priscilla and Luca are sent down separate paths as the night’s stars fade into dawn.

Becoming a fan!

This is the second book I have read by this author. Love the time gap style of the coinciding stories. Enjoyed the mystery and intrigue. Loved the details in the history and periods of the story. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Great narration and unexpected storyline

I loved the voice of the narrator. The story was creative and not like others so I enjoyed it very much. I actually finished it in three days. This is my second book by this author and the second time I have listened to this narrator. I will search for both Sarah Zimmerman and Michelle Shocklee on audible. Often when I find a narrator I enjoy it will lead me to authors I have not read.

A beautiful story of past lives and love.

I hung onto every word and didn't want to stop listening! The narrators were exceptional for this period of time, 1800's into 1960's. Really good story line and I so hope there'll be a part 2!

Fantastic Story of Grace and Redemption

Michelle Shocklee has woven a tale of grace, forgiveness, and redemption set against the back drop of the 1897 Tennessee Exposition that will leave listeners on the edge of their seat! This dual timeline novel effortlessly flows between 1897 and 1961 leaving intentional breadcrumbs that made me hungry for more of the story and from this author! Shocklee has moved to the top of my go-to author list.

For audiobook listeners, this narrator is superb!

Clean romance with a little history

It’s nice to find a clean and wholesome novel appropriate for younger readers. There were a couple of unnecessary literary devices (no spoilers) but all in all, a sweet read.

Heart warming

This fictional yet historically correct novel touches on the disparity between immigrants and their employers. A well written tale of the life and times of the Maxwell Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.

annoying narration

I hate to say this, because these narrators are so talented, but I couldn’t make it through this one. The silly southern drawl just got so repetitive and annoying. I couldn’t handle it.
