About this listen
We seem to wake up to a new tragedy in the news every day - Newtown, Boston, Aurora, Columbine. So often the reporters say that "there were some signs, but nobody acted". The scary part about these tragedies is that less than one percent of criminals are incarcerated for their crimes, meaning that for every headline, there are millions of dangerous situations in which average people find themselves. On top of that, how can ordinary people identify threats from those who may not hurt them physically, but can devastate their lives on a daily basis - the crazy coworkers, out-of control family members, or relentless neighbors? In Dangerous Personalities, former FBI profiler Joe Navarro shows listeners how to identify the four most common "dangerous personalities", and analyze how much of a threat each one can be: the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid, and the Unstable Personality. Along the way, listeners learn how to protect themselves both immediately and long-term - as well as how to recover from the trauma of being close to such a destructive force.

Story
In his groundbreaking best seller The Gift of Fear, Gavin de Becker showed millions of readers that, like every creature on earth, human beings can predict violent behavior. Now, in this exclusive audio presentation of Protecting the Gift, de Becker empowers parents to fully trust their own intuition when it comes to their children's safety. In this indispensable resource, de Becker provides keen insights into the behavior and strategies of predators. He offers practical new steps to enhance children's safety at every age level: specific questions parents can ask to effectively screen and evaluate babysitters, daycare services, schools, and doctors; a "Test of 12" safety skills children need before being alone in public; warning signs to help parents protect children from sexual abuse; and how to keep teenage girls and boys from unsafe situations with peers and adults. De Becker also shatters the myth that rules like "Never talk to strangers" will keep your children safe. By showing what danger really looks like - as opposed to what we might imagine it looks like - de Becker gives parents freedom from many common worries and unwarranted fears.

Story
We know of psychopaths from chilling headlines and stories in the news and movies - from Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy to Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. As Dr. Kent Kiehl shows, psychopaths can be identified by a checklist of symptoms that includes pathological lying; lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse; grandiose sense of self-worth; manipulation; and failure to accept one’s actions. But why do psychopaths behave the way they do? Is it the result of their environment - how they were raised - or is there a genetic component to their lack of conscience?

essential reading for those in trouble
there is a lot of essential information in this book to familiarize people with potentially dangerous personalities. It took me a while to get through it, as it is very intense. However, it is a tool, and a good resource for those in need. I worked for most of my career with victims of violent Behavior, either child abuse or sexual abuse. I wish that I had known about this book to refer to many of my clients.

Good book, great information
Narrator is too dramatic in his pronunciations at times. Good book though, very useful information. Keep in mind, it IS written by a former FBI agent so there is some bias.

Shallow look at Personality Disorders
The author could have titled this Run Away from Anyone with a Personality Disorder and saved everyone the time of listening. There’s nothing in this book about effectively dealing with someone with a personality disorder beyond running away from them, calling the police, or hiring a lawyer. Demonizing people with personality disorders doesn’t help anyone.

interesting insight
Having dealt with several individuals that display many of these characteristics, and not recognized how problematic they could be until it was too late, it's great hearing it codified into words from a professional instead of just going on instinct.
