About this listen

Sheriff Bree Taggert’s downfall is part of a killer’s cunning design in #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s novel of murder, lies, and revenge.

Called to an isolated farm to check on an elderly widow, Sheriff Bree Taggert finds a brutal double homicide. One of the victims is Eugene Oscar, the bitter and corrupt former deputy she recently forced out of the department.

Working with criminal investigator Matt Flynn, Bree discovers that she isn’t the only one who had a troubling history with Eugene. But someone doesn’t want Bree digging up the past. She becomes the target of a stranger’s sick and devious campaign calculated to destroy her reputation, career, family, and new relationship with Matt. To make matters worse, she’s the prime suspect in Eugene’s murder.

When her chief deputy goes missing while investigating the case, Bree refuses to back down. She won’t let him become the next victim. His life and her future depend on finding a killer nursing a vengeful rage.

Both interesting and frustrating at same time

I love the progression of personal and family life. Found myself frustrated by Sheriff Taggert's reaction to some situations that could have been resolved more easily with quicker simple actions. But that would have resolved some minor villains in press and maybe other agencies.

Part of those frustrations might be a tendency of mine as I get deeper into longer book series.

GREAT BOOK

Melinda Leigh did it again. I love this series. I also love how she brings in characters in from her other series. I love the Morgan Dane series and I'm glad to see her in this one as well.

Love This Series and This Book

Bree and Matt once again find themselves facing corruption and police politics, as well as yellow journalism, when Bree becomes the chief suspect in a gruesome double homicide. Have they got what it takes to survive professionally and personally against the onslaught. I enjoyed listening to these two and others struggle against the odds on all fronts, and bonus points for a brief time with Morgan and Lance. I highly recommend this book and series.

Another good story

It’s an enjoyable next book in the series where Bree has to balance work, family and love. She has to deal with a case with a previous deputy.

Excellent murder mystery

While I have read all of her books in the series I believe this was her best one. There was action & adventure. Yes this book can be a standalone but it makes so much more sense if you read the first book of the series. I look forward to another book from this author.

Twists and turns

I usually read Lisa Scottoline’s books. Many but not all are very well written, This book was as good or better than one of hers, Getting everybody’s relationship straight in the beginning was a little tricky but once done it was easy to follow. I like the sheriff being a strong woman. The narrator was as good as any, I guess I don’t like opposite sec pretending to be other sex, Sometimes I cannot tell who is speaking. I assume cost is what deters from hiring a second narrator. I have this one five stars bc she is good.
