About this listen

HE PLANNED TO OBLITERATE AN ENTIRE CITY. HE THOUGHT NO ONE COULD STAND IN HIS WAY. BUT HE HADN'T HEARD OF RIYRIA.

When a master-craftsmen dwarf is fired, he threatens retaliation. The rogues-for-hire known as Riyria are commissioned to find and stop him. Traveling to the paradise resort of Tur Del Fur, the two are granted a lavish allowance that, along with the easy job, promises to turn the trip into a vacation.

Everything would have been perfect except that the disgruntled employee’s last name is Berling and the target of his wrath is the legendary towers of Drumindor.

It's been more than five years since the last adventure with Royce Melborn (a cynical ex-assassin) and Hadrian Blackwater (an idealistic ex-mercenary), a pair whose bonds of friendship are bound with blood. This is the 20th novel based in the world of Elan and the fifth in the Riyria Chronicle series.

Less than expected

I have followed Riyria from the beginning and always enjoy the narration of Tim Gerard Reynolds. I appreciate that this story was trying to give us a deeper look into the relationships of the main characters. The storyline is problematic, however, and some of the relevance of events don't necessarily make much sense.

This book is a prequel to other books, and that is fine, but there still needs to be some clearly connectivity.

Enjoyable but less than hoped for

With all the hype from previous books about what happened in Drumendor, I was expecting more action and peril. Most of that was shoved to the end. From the end note, it seems like, perhaps, what could have been was toned down based on what other fans were writing and wanting. The book was about 90% leisure and lore and about 10% action and peril. I would have preferred 50-50 or 60-40 based on the hype, but it was still good overall.

Michael knocks it out of the park again

If you’ve followed the series in its entirety you’ll absolutely love this. If you’ve just have listened to the Riyria series you love revisiting them. I didn’t realize how much I needed another Ryria tale until I listened to this. So don’t wait, go ahead and purchase this.

Vacation gets a bit more exciting than strictly necessary.

Our favorite dynamic duo of thieves set out on what should be a relatively simple job. The word should should be highlighted, italicized, underlined, bolded, and generally understood that the proposed simplicity will not be the case.

I really loved this story, there are some truly funny lines and scenes that make me laugh, while others made me feel feelings I’ll publicly deny. It was like reuniting with old friends. The narration as always is top notch. There are a lot of fun Easter eggs in this book for those who have read all of the other Michael J. Sullivan books.

Just Marvelous!

Listening to this book was spending time with dear friends after a long separation. Another great performance from Mr. Reynolds makes me cherish it even more. Please write more.
