About this listen

"Finlay’s debut is a twisty puzzle that will please fans of thrillers, suspense, and true crime. Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom capably voice a large cast of characters and keep ratcheting up the tension." (Library Journal)

One of the Most Anticipated Books of 2021: • Newsweek • CNN • E! Online • Goodreads • BuzzFeed • PopSugar • BookBub • Bibliofile • Mystery and Suspense

In one of the year’s most anticipated debut psychological thrillers, a family made infamous by a true-crime documentary is found dead, leaving their surviving son to uncover the truth about their final days.

“They found the bodies on a Tuesday.” So begins this twisty and breathtaking novel that traces the fate of the Pine family, a thriller that will both leave you on the edge of your seat and move you to tears.

After a late night of partying, NYU student Matt Pine returns to his dorm room to devastating news: nearly his entire family - his mom, his dad, his little brother and sister - have been found dead from an apparent gas leak while vacationing in Mexico. The local police claim it was an accident, but the FBI and State Department seem far less certain - and they won’t tell Matt why.

The tragedy makes headlines everywhere because this isn’t the first time the Pine family has been thrust into the media spotlight. Matt’s older brother, Danny - currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his teenage girlfriend Charlotte - was the subject of a viral true crime documentary suggesting that Danny was wrongfully convicted. Though the country has rallied behind Danny, Matt holds a secret about his brother that he’s never told anyone: the night Charlotte was killed Matt saw something that makes him believe his brother is guilty of the crime.

When Matt returns to his small hometown to bury his parents and siblings, he’s faced with a hostile community that was villainized by the documentary, a frenzied media, and memories he’d hoped to leave behind forever. Now, as the deaths in Mexico appear increasingly suspicious and connected to Danny’s case, Matt must unearth the truth behind the crime that sent his brother to prison - putting his own life in peril - and forcing him to confront his every last fear.

Told through multiple points-of-view and alternating between past and present, Alex Finlay's Every Last Fear is not only a gripping thriller, it’s also a poignant story about a family managing heartbreak and tragedy, and living through a fame they never wanted.

Really enjoyed the story, although I had much of it figured out about halfway through. Still, I thought the writing was solid, and the characters were developed enough to make me feel as if I knew them and could have feelings one way or the other toward them. Overall, I recommend this book.

But the narration was dreadful. I hate to tell the narrators, but people in Nebraska do not have a Wisconsin or North Dakota accent. Every time one of the characters who was allegedly from Nebraska spoke, it came out sounding as if they were from somewhere in Wisconsin or from Fargo. I was waiting for a “you betcha“ any minute. I am not from any of these places, and it was still highly annoying.

Loved the story, hated the narration

Great story. The narrator for the FBI agent sounded like she was sixteen. Other than that, I loved it.

Loved this!

Too many unnecessary characters and side story lines. Couldn’t really get into it bc you never got a chance to really know the main characters… or any characters actually. So I ended up not really liking or caring about anyone. Loved “The Night Shift” by this author though!

Convoluted

This book was absolutely outstanding and heart-wrenching. I would definitely recommend this book! It had me from beginning to end. The characters were so well-developed and relatable that I found myself emotionally. The author's writing style was captivating, I couldn't put it down and I'm already looking forward to reading more from this author.

I loved everything!

Weaving together a variety of points of view and providing the clues through non-linear story telling, the author does a great job of keeping the reader guessing about what's really going on and who's behind the crime. Really interesting way of taking the fascination the public has for "true crime" stories and using that to drive the plot of this fun "read." Using two readers for the audio book was a great choice as well, as it helps emphasize the different lines of the story that are going on at once. Looking forward to more from this author!!

Smartly crafted thriller!

Story moved along well and kept you guessing. Author didn't go off on a long boring tangent like so many do. Very good read.
