Publisher's summary

From the critically acclaimed author of The Knockout Queen and The Girls from Corona del Mar comes a darkly humorous story that charts the unlikely friendship of two women and exposes the absurdity of everything from playground drama to marriage to Goodreads reviews.

Motherhood has turned out to be a lot weirder and lonelier than Mary anticipated - has the world gone crazy, or has she? Most of the time, it feels like both. But when her oldest starts kindergarten, Mary meets another mom, Fiona, and the two form an unusual yet exhilarating friendship. There’s only one problem: Mary doesn’t really like Fiona’s husband, Andreas. What begins as a minor irritation keeps intensifying and changing shape in Mary’s mind as Andreas’s perceived wrongdoings pile up, until she can’t distinguish integrity from self-sabotage.

Everyone’s Happy is both an unnervingly honest examination of the shifting loyalties between family and friendship and a love letter to the absurd banalities of suburban life.

???

The story didn’t have any meaning in my eyes. Didn’t go anywhere. Felt confused the whole time.

Intimate look at 2 couples relationships

Deep thoughts of 2 couples, in which the 2 ladies become besties, because of their children. We get to hear the innermost thoughts of the women as they think about aspects of the relationship and each other, and what happens when sometimes, those thoughts get said out loud. There were a few explicit moments. It did on a couple of occasions feel like the ramblings went to far away from the storyline and I wasn't sure which character was saying what but overall an entertaining listen.

Huh!?

This would have been a good book, but it just ended. Just was DONE... Had so much information &then no explanation or outcome of any of it. Very odd. Too odd. You got 2 crazy chicks w/2 sad husbands that just ARE... I really was engrossed into it too. HMPH...

Did I miss the point ?

When this was finished, I thought “what was I supposed to get from this story ?” It seemed to have no point, unless I missed it. I did like the narrator.

No real plot/action/problem

The writing is engaging and the writer’s voice is strong, but nothing really happens. A series of small everyday problems are faced and resolved (or not) but it doesn’t feel like enough. Nothing was really at stake. Disappointing only because it had promise.

A meandering tale of your average woman

While this story doesn't exactly have a strict A to B storyline, it still felt well worth a listen and I found myself seeing my own idiosyncrasies in the characters. This story is deserving of four stars for it's ability to send me into mild existential crises alone.

Review A Review

A cleverly constructed tale of judgement, the ones we impose on ourselves and others. A fine portrayal of the fault line between civility and self preservation.

Lovely story cut short

I loved how the author included inner dialogues so realistically and how she portrayed the different relationships. But the story seemed to end right in the middle - super disappointing! I wanted to know how things were resolved, what happens next.

Creative Expression

Take a 58 minute look into the lives and relationship of two women in their 30's. I liked how one was assertively while the other not. in also liked how their friendship ensured despite that fact.

Such a funny, heartwarming book

This is such a great book. It's not my typical genre, but I've been trying some new things lately. It was a wonderful palate cleanser for me after reading multiple thrillers back to back. I loved the relationship between Fiona and Mary. The author clearly has an incredible sense of humor.
The narrator did an exceptional job. I've listened to a few books by this narrator and she has done an incredible job with each one.
