About this listen

So many of us today feel like we’re merely existing instead of thriving - and that’s where a purpose-oriented mind-set comes in. Living with purpose means using your gifts, in keeping with your values, to make a positive impact on the lives of others. But it’s not easy. Half the work of cultivating greater purpose in life involves facing personal and profound questions. What matters most to me? What do I value in other people, and why? What positive change do I want to see in the world?

Finding Your Purpose is designed to help answer questions like these and to put you on the path to meaning. Over the span of 10 engaging, empowering lessons, Professor Christine B. Whelan translates academic research into a program for making a difference in your everyday life, giving you a guidebook for anticipating - and navigating - the practical and emotional obstacles that may stand in the way of discovering your purpose. Whether you’re pushed by pain to make a change in your life or simply intrigued by the possibility of an even better life, this Audible Original is about possibilities and purpose.

It is, ultimately, an Audible Original made just for you.

Basic Guidance on Finding Your Purpose

It's like a combination of listening to lectures and talking to a counselor. Finding your purpose is the "why" of wanting to do something (e.g., feeling fulfilled in helping people or expressing yourself through art). Your goals are the "what" you want to have done (e.g., being a doctor to help cancer patients or having a book published). The information is basic, but it might useful to those who get inspired when hearing stories of how other people found their purpose.

Action oriented approach

The lecture format may not be ideal for everyone but I felt there was a good balance between examples, stories, and actionable tasks to make it engaging throughout the series. I particularly liked the way that the purpose statement was formed in a “mad libs” approach with concrete incorporation of the focus from each subsequent chapter discussion. It’s also nice to have the full statement summarized at the end of lesson 10 to bring it all together.

Live with purpose

Lecture 1 to 5 is where all the meat of the subject was and I want to relisten to it. I found lecture 6 to the end a bit religious but I took away two vital points. I think these two vital points are religious concepts but worth having in your life. One is live life as if things are in abundance, find your own purpose, create your own niche and avoid a I win you lose situation. Two is learn to be grateful for what you have and what luck has bestowed. As Warren Buffet said if you have X and you think X plus more X will make you happier then you will never be happy.

immediately Useful Marerial

I liked her mad-lib method for creating a purpose statement - it took away the procrastination and consternation. I was able to share this method of finding a purpose with a few people, who were looking for direction, and it helped them with their decision-making.
