About this listen

A temple desecrated. Sealed paths opened. Let the hijinks begin!

Sergeant Marcus Bola and his platoon flew to a newly uncovered temple in the desert while deployed overseas, an unheard-of mission. Something in the ruined holy place had killed many, and the survivors met an unfortunate ambush just before reaching safety. The attack left Marcus wounded and medically discharged from the only life he’s known...but something wasn’t right. None of it was.

Laying low and waiting for answers, Marcus decides tending bar is as good a way to stay afloat and off the radar. Turns out slinging cocktails, singing karaoke, and talking to the patrons isn’t as easy as he thought it would be: Gods, monsters, and devils are showing up to try the mixers.

The vessel has been chosen. Something inside him is calling the shots - and we’re not talking about tequila!

UF meets LitRPG beautifully

Initial chapter had me thinking this would be a different style of book but I found this first few chapters a wonderful introduction to the world leaving a few lingering questions I hope are addressed deeper into this series. A great first entry into a world I look forward to learning more about

I'm having a lot of fun guessing who Galaxy really is, I look forward to learning More about the patrons and am a Big fan of Lucy and hope to see more Anu.

darn near 5 star save for some minor fumbles but realistically a 5star for anyone interested in either genre.

only real nit: the RPG elements are a bit more jarring due to the Urban Fantasy setting but are likely just a few bits out from being perfectly embedded.

great narration and a great story

Home run!!!

I like the fact, that half way through the book I thought this is unlike other books of its kind and what a fresh approach! Bravo! Great performance by both narrators!

Vet gets thrown into fantasy world among us

I've enjoyed Christopher Johns other series and I like what he's created here just as much. I like the fantasy world existing among us "normies" theme. That theme isn't new, but Johns has given it his own flavor that I enjoyed and has me excited to see where it goes. There are some gamified elements in the story, and I felt they tied in to the plot well without having characters living in a game. The characters were fun and we got glimpses of fantasy cultures which I liked. I love the pop culture references that are almost breaking the 4th wall a bit.

The narration was great as well. I liked that we had a female narrator for the female characters. I wonder if we'll see some of the story told from the women's POV in later books in the series?

Glad I bought this

When I first saw this book I liked the description the book had. I checked what others where saying about it in their reviews to help decide if I wanted to get it. One review almost made me decide to skip over this book. After finishing this book though I was glad I got it. It’s like an IRL full dive VR if the IRL was closer to Dresden Files. Very enjoyable listen, gonna buy book two ASAP.

ah the High Table

Chris Johns, you glorious bastard, you've done it again. You've got the wife and I hooked. I can not wait to aquire the entire series, you know, as soon as it comes out. The narration was great, can't wait to see how they handle some of the voices coming up. You sir, are a literary giant and a master of the paper and plume. You keep writing and we will keep helping to keep the inkwell full. Do not ever quit this amazing road you travel.

even better than Axe druid

this is a quick and dirty world filled with supernatural beings and our MC is just as clueless as we are...
plenty of humour couple together with great storytelling...
on top of this it's easy to tell that Chris served and still loves his guns...

if you like Monster Hunter International, this is a book for you

Stellar new series.

Excellent new urban fantasy series by Christopher Johns. Very light GameLit story that brings in some of the expected leveling and skill ups without getting too 'crunchy' on the stats.
The author does a good job of world building the fantasy elements into the normal world and brings in mythical beings not normally found in urban fantasy. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Both narrators did an amazing job. I've enjoyed a number of books narrated by Christian Gilliland and after hearing Dansare Marks performance I'll be looking for more books read by her.
