About this listen
Overcome the 12 habits holding you back and take your career to new heights with this wise and approachable guide from two business leadership experts.
Ready to take the next step in your career...but not sure what's holding you back? Listen on.
Leadership expert Sally Helgesen and best-selling leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith have trained thousands of high achievers - men and women - to reach even greater heights. Again and again, they see that women face specific and different road blocks from men as they advance in the workplace. In fact, the very habits that helped women early in their careers can hinder them as they move up. Simply put, what got you here won't get you there...and you might not even realize your blind spots until it's too late.
Are you great with the details? To rise, you need to do less and delegate more.
Are you a team player? To advance, you need to take credit as easily as you share it.
Are you a star networker? Leaders know a network is no good unless you know how to use it.
Sally and Marshall identify the 12 habits that hold women back as they seek to advance, showing them why what worked for them in the past might actually be sabotaging their future success. Building on Marshall's classic best seller What Got You Here Won't Get You There, their new book, How Women Rise, is essential listening for any woman who is ready to advance to the next level.

Story
Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining.

With this book as their guide, listeners can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—and avoid the trap of existential regret, the kind that reroutes destinies and persecutes our memories.

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she describes how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset.

Critic reviews
"A myth-busting "how to" for the next generation of women leaders, and those who want to see them succeed. These ideas will transform our workplaces, our careers, and our lives." (Rita McGrath, professor at Columbia Business School and a Thinkers50 Top Ten Business Thinker)
"Extraordinary real-life stories of women who wait to be asked to the party, get stuck in their comfort zone, seek perfection, and assume their hard work will be recognized. Sally and Marshall show us how to get unstuck and to 'stand out' so women can move forward in more purposeful, powerful, and productive careers. This is a must read with great actionable advice!" (Janice Reals Ellig, chief executive officer of Chadick Ellig and one of BusinessWeek's "World's Most Influential Headhunters")
"Sally and Marshall give new meaning to the term 'dream team.' Together they have produced a masterpiece, an over-the-moon but magnificently down-to-earth leadership book for the ages." (Tom Peters, best-selling author of In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best-Run Companies)

More than 50 years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, the wage gap still hovers at 80 percent, and only five percent of CEOs in the Fortune 500 are women. Today, rising up the ranks in many companies still often means cutthroat, win-at-all-costs tactics, where being the loudest voice in the room is more important than being the person with the best ideas for moving the company forward. Not surprisingly, most women don’t want to play this game.

Story
More than 50 years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, the wage gap still hovers at 80 percent, and only five percent of CEOs in the Fortune 500 are women. Today, rising up the ranks in many companies still often means cutthroat, win-at-all-costs tactics, where being the loudest voice in the room is more important than being the person with the best ideas for moving the company forward. Not surprisingly, most women don’t want to play this game.

Marianne Williamson is a best-selling author, a world-renowned teacher, and one of the most important spiritual voices of our time. In Tears to Triumph, she argues that we - as a culture and as individuals - have learned to avoid facing pain. By doing so we are neglecting the spiritual work of healing. Instead of allowing ourselves to embrace our hurt, we numb it, medicate it, dismiss it, or otherwise divert our attention so that we never have to face it.

Writing as a friend who has also walked through difficult times, Rebekah Lyons—the bestselling author of Rhythms of Renewal and the popular host of the Rhythms for Life podcast—reminds us of adversity that always comes with a choice: will discouragement, stress, and fear cause you to crumble, or will you embrace the strength you've already been given?

A timely and impactful read!
This is a must read for every leader who is committed to helping Women rise. I’ve read and listen to the book; I’ve also interviewed the authors. What I found particularly helpful, beyond the identification of specific habits that hold women back, was learning where the 12 habits originate, and how to disrupt them.

Fantastic content
The reader is a little slow so I turned it up to 1.25x, but she's a great choice for the content. This book has a lot of heavy hitting points that drive self reflection; her gentle voice definitely softened the blow because some of the comments were definitely personal attacks haha. Fantastic content. Recommend it for women in mid-management positions, especially those that struggle with perception issues or with constructively handling potentially inaccurate criticism.

Finally an actionable female perspective
For years I’ve read books on how to do more of what I’m already doing. This calls out other “bad habits” while showing they are useful in certain situations. It teaches you how to keep certain things in check and explains the reasoning behind the method. It was worth every penny.
