About this listen
Read by the author.
You can't make the world fair, but you can take back your power.
As a woman in Silicon Valley who worked her way to the top of the corporate ladder—she's a former VP at Facebook and the current president and CEO of Ancestry—Deborah Liu knows firsthand the challenges and obstacles in the workplace that keep the deck stacked against women in the workplace . . . and the ways to overcome them.
For every woman who grew up competing on the uneven playing field, who is told she is too aggressive, assertive, dramatic, or emotional, this book is the battle cry you need to learn to thrive within the system that exists today, even if it's not the one we wish it were.
Take Back Your Power presents both hard data and Liu's personal experiences from twenty years as a woman leader in the male-dominated tech industry to help you:
- Find your voice, learn how to ask, and achieve what you want in a system that isn't fair and wasn't created for you
- Debunk the negative connotations of "power" and harness it for your own success
- Discover how to be heard, seen, and taken more seriously at work by getting out of your own way
- Overcome the lie that success is only achieved alone by finding the four types of allies you need to reach your goals
- Become a great leader without losing yourself in the process
You have the power to change the future of work for yourself—and for women everywhere.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Leadership expert Sally Helgesen and best-selling leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith have trained thousands of high achievers - men and women - to reach even greater heights. Again and again, they see that women face specific and different road blocks from men as they advance in the workplace. In fact, the very habits that helped women early in their careers can hinder them as they move up. Simply put, what got you here won't get you there...and you might not even realize your blind spots until it's too late.

But over the following two decades as a TV reporter and creator of CNBC’s Disruptor 50 franchise, interviewing, and studying thousands of executives, she realized that a gender-equity utopia shouldn’t be a pipe dream.

Story
Imagine walking up to a stranger on the subway and asking them for their seat. What about asking a random person on the street if you could borrow their phone? If the idea makes you squeamish, you're not alone - social psychologists have found that doing these very things makes most of us almost unbearably uncomfortable. But here's the funny thing: even though we hate to ask for help, most people are wired to be helpful. And that's a good thing, because every day in the modern, uber-collaborative workplace, we all need to know when and how to call in the cavalry.

Speak Up ~ Culture Change is Overdue
Leaders at all levels should read/listen to Take Back Your Power. This is for men and women who seek growth within thier circles, within organizations and touches the unspoken dynamics of gender integration across professions, industies to include the 'swim lanes' within our homes. Collaboration, inclusiveness and routine goal assessment is vital in all circles of one's life because they are all connected. We all matter, speak up.

Very impactful book
As a fellow introverted Product leader whose voice is often overlooked and power often diminished, this book really resonated with me and gave me hope, motivation and clear steps I can take to make a difference in the trajectory of my life. Thank you, Deb Liu, for writing this book and narrating and offering it through audible.

Practical, hopeful and inspirational
Really enjoyed how Deborah started with reality, we’re not on even an playing field and it’s still valuable to share your voice. It was encouraging to have representation from an Asian American exec in tech. Thank you for being courageous and sharing your story!

This book has been one of the most transformational books I have read in a while. Deborah gives great framework and toolkit for women to find and establish their voice in workplace.

Amazing
I loved the book! I extremly liked the stories of vulnerable but strong and successful women. being narrated by the author herself gave an extra layer of authenticity to the story in my opinion. Thank you Deborah Liu for sharing these thoughts and shaping them into this book! It is really inspirational!
