About this listen

This program is read by the author.

From New Yorker and Onion writer and comedian Blythe Roberson, How to Date Men When You Hate Men is a comedy philosophy audiobook aimed at interrogating what it means to date men within the trappings of modern society.

Blythe Roberson’s sharp observational humor is met by her openhearted willingness to revel in the ugliest warts and shimmering highs of choosing to live our lives among other humans. She collects her crushes like ill-cared-for pets, skewers her own suspect decisions, and assures listeners that any date you can mess up, she can top tenfold. And really, was that date even a date in the first place?

With sections like: Real Interviews with Men About Whether or Not It Was a Date; Good Flirts That Work; Bad Flirts That Do Not Work; and Definitive Proof That Tom Hanks Is the Villain of You’ve Got Mail, How to Date Men When You Hate Men is a one-stop shop for dating advice when you love men but don't like them.

Early Praise for How to Date Men When You Hate Men:

"How to Date Men When You Hate Men is an incredibly funny read that was surely not written when Blythe was supposed to be working for me." (Stephen Colbert)

"Funny, sharp, and feminist fun in a way we’re led to believe isn’t possible. You’ll have a blast reading this and then date...or not date anyone because you are living your best single life with new best friend Roberson by your side.” (Phoebe Robinson, New York Times best-selling author of You Can't Touch My Hair)

"Roberson’s achievement in remaining funny while excavating her pain is just straightforwardly heroic." (The New Republic)

Time to smash the patriarchy

Every word of this book resonates so deeply with my experiences with romance in the modern world. Funny, poignant, pointed, Roberson is a delight to listen to.

Also, I'm mildly concerned about her obsession with Harry Styles.

Some good insights but overall just ok

I knew this wasn’t an actual advice book and was meant to be more comedic and lighthearted, but it didn’t exactly scratch the itch I was hoping for.
There were still moments of validation and thought-provoking comments, which I enjoyed, but the humor just wasn’t fully for me, and that’s fine!

Phenomenal! Pretty sure the author is my long lost soul sister

I’m not going to lie, I bought this cover ENTIRELY based on the title and cover art (both bomb!)
However, as I listened to this book over the last few weeks I felt really seen. It’s lovely hearing a similar narrative to yours, spoken to you in a truthful but comedic way. How to Date Men When You Hate Men is worth your time. Blythe is honest, vulnerable, and uniquely funny. 1000/10 recommend.

In the beginning of the book she takes time to explain that she is a cis, white, college educated woman and she is mostly discussing hating cis, white, college educated men-I appreciated her acknowledgment of privilege and inequality.

Women will get it, men need to read it

“Not only would I be in Ravenclaw but I would a personal essay for the daily profit about my unhealthy attraction to Slytherin boys.” Immediately and acceptably relatable.

Review by a privileged man

I went into this book not really knowing what to expect. If you are a man wondering if you should read this, I recommend it. The author hates the patriarchy, not you (potential male reader)specifically.

The author shares many alien and many familiar gripes and joys of the dating world. While i didn't feel the same way she did on some topics, those were the interesting ones to hear about. I got almost none of the early 2000s rom com references though.

I consider it a well used 6 hours.

Dissappinting

I was looking forward to a progressive feminist review and solutions to being attracted to men without feeling like you’re falling into old gender norms. So much of the book was spent talking about how she couldn’t tell if anything was a date or not. Something I have yet to find relatable and hope to never find relatable.

This is stupid

I can't read this. I feel like my brain just melted reading the first chapter.
