About this listen

Best-selling author Mark Bittman and physician David Katz cut through all the noise on food, health, and diet to give you the real answers you need

What is the best diet? Do calories matter? And when it comes to protein, fat, and carbs, which ones are good and which are bad? Mark Bittman and health expert David Katz answer all these questions and more in a lively and easy-to-understand Q&A format.

Inspired by their viral hit article on Grub Street, one of New York magazine's most popular and most-shared articles, Bittman and Katz share their clear, no-nonsense perspective on food and diet, answering questions covering everything from basic nutrients to superfoods to fad diets. Topics include dietary patterns (Just what should humans eat?); grains (Aren't these just carbs? Do I need to avoid gluten?); meat and dairy (Does grass-fed matter?); alcohol (Is drinking wine actually good for me?); and more. Throughout, Bittman and Katz filter the science of diet and nutrition through a lens of common sense, delivering straightforward advice with a healthy dose of wit.

I enjoyed it the audio book.. It definitely builds and supports plant based diets. I was surprised that taste preferences can change. I plan on re-listening to it periodically to reiterate the lesson.

Well Supported

Beware: this book's not for "beginners" on the matters of food. Even though it's destined to speak to food enthusiasts I believe it can also resonate very well w/ food and health professionals too. I recommend everyone read this, but after having read a few authors such as Marion Nestle and Michael Pollan, to name a few, and also I suggest that you embrace this book having an understanding of the trending available dietary plans.

The authors seem to be lobby-free, share a very fair point of view on food and health, and do justice to terms and definitions we're very familiar with, from a very just place.

The most recommendable book on food I've read.

This book seems to have quality, up to the minute info and goes a long way in debunking some of the current health fads. As many have stated, there is a definite, but well backed up, bias toward plant based eating. Personally, I’ve been very confused lately (is real butter bad or good? etc.) and the book thoughtfully addresses and dissects some of the diet industry’s hype. The narrator, I felt, sounded very scoldy. It’s as if with every sentence he reads, he is silently ending it with “Dumbsh**!” Maybe it’s just me, but I definitely felt lectured by his tone.

Helped With the Confusion

As a teacher who's trying to instill the concepts of lifetime wellness into my health and physical education students I have read a lot of nutrition books. This book seems to be a one-stop shop that gives it to you straight and covers all the major diets out there today, from what is good about each to what is bad. The book does this all while keeping content simple and easy to understand in the way that will help me and my students. Thank you.

#1 Choice for deciding on a healthy diet.

I enjoyed the better understanding and in-depth explanation of different foods and diets. I am much more prepared to make the necessary diet changes in life for overall health.

So informational

Pretty much all of your questions about your diet’s affect on your health and all the popular “diets” will be answered here as well as instructions on a general approach to food. It gets a bit preachy at times and sometimes oversimplifies important concepts, but that doesn’t detract from the overall value. The narration does a good job of matching the conversational tone of the text. Would recommend.

Exhaustive and a bit preachy

An excellent explanation of nutrition and how it effects health. The most balanced of the many many books that I've read on the topic

Excellent book. Demystifys health and nutrition

this is an excellent source of nutritional advice, combining evidence-based science and common sense. in easy to understand language the authors provide guidance without being paternalistic ot preachy. no conspiracy theories, very common in some books and media, and not ideology, though slightly trending towards vegetarian/vegan. some examples are overused, like the "gas on fire," or the replacing something with donuts. highly recommended

Great summary of nutritional advice
