About this listen

We were prepared for an earthquake. We had a flood plan in place. We could even have dealt with zombies. Probably.

But no one expected the end to be quite so... sticky... or strawberry scented.

Yahtzee Croshaw (Mogworld, Zero Punctuation Reviews) returns to print with a follow-up to his smash-hit debut: Jam, a dark comedy about the one apocalypse no one predicted.

Critic reviews

"[Croshaw is] able to pull off slapstick comedy in print, and that's no easy feat."–ComicsAlliance

I may give it another go....

there's another review that suggests speeding it up to 1.7x. I will try that if I give it another listen.

I only made it thru about the first 3 chapters and had to bail.

loved save/destroy for food/money. This disappointed

My latest FAVORITE book!

Yahtzee Croshaw has won me over AGAIN! This story is the best zombie-less apocalypse ever! Giant spider, man-eating jam, plastic-wrapped people, and fabulous sarcastic dialogue, you'll find it all here. Just a fun romp into a strawberry-scented nightmare.

Not His Best

While "Jam" is an interesting and amusing take on an apocalyptic scenario, it lacks the deeper insights and message present in the Jack McKeown series. Yahtzee's an amazing reader, though, and there were laugh-out-loud moments of comedic timing, the overall story just felt flat to me. The characters didn't evolve, and the social/cultural commentary was weak. It was worth a listen, but as a palate cleanser between other, "heavier" books.

wished for more.

it's a story you always think is going to get more interesting or deeper, featuring a protagonist you think is finally going to do something. right up until the very end. Not Yahtzee's strongest work but it's good for a laugh in plenty of parts.

Well read and well written Yahtzee at his best.

Ironic? Yes but you’ll have to read the story to find out why. I could X-plain but that would spoil it. :-). Well ended.

Listen at 1.5x for a good time

As others have mentioned, play this one at about 1.5x speed to get the proper Yahtzee effect.

A fun little story, told from the perspective of nigh-clueless survivors, with Yahtzee Croshaw’s classic wit and cynicism.

Not as polished as his later stuff, but worth a listen.

Yahtzee's weakest work is still quote good

This is the last of Yahtzee's work I've read/listened to, and I think it's my least favorite of them. The characters are amusing, with each being defined most sharply by a running gag, and the moment-to-moment humor is as good as it always is with Yahtzee, maybe even better than some of his recent work. I did find several of the major plot points and even the ending to be oddly predictable; I don't know if I just got lucky in my musings or if there were several instances of foreshadowing I didn't realize I had picked up on for how things would ultimately turn out. Either way, it did dampen my enjoyment a little, when I haven't experienced this in any of Yahtzee's other books.
As for the narration, it's a step up from how I remember Mogworld being, but it is quite slow, with occasional pops and technical hiccups. I listened on 1.4 speed. Yahtzee's character voices are quite distinct, and his comedic timing still lands well on increased speed.
Overall, it's worth the listen. I would just recommend increasing the playback speed, even if you don't normally do so. 3.5/5.

Jampocalypse!

A bit of American bashing, but it was accidental. Tim’s character was a hoot. Another crazy story like the others of Yahtzee Croshaw’s I’ve had the pleasure to read.

Horrible Narration Ruined This

I could “hear” the humor & sarcasm if I closed my eyes and concentrated hard, but the monotonous narrator did not have in him the capability to convey humor and sarcasm. The result of which was frustratingly boring and flat. I just could not finish this.
