About this listen

Eric wanted to be a barkeep, like his adoptive father. He wanted only to run the family inn and enjoy his small corner of the world. His dreams weren't of adventure or power. His dreams were modest and humble.

His dreams were not to be. As the bastard son of Lord EarthScorn, he had a Knack, which meant he would have to be trained as a wizard for the council. He would have to defend the kingdom from the evils of the outer world.

Magic came with benefits; power, long life, money. But Eric didn't want any of that. His time in the magical academy only reinforced his views of magic and the kingdom. He didn't want to fight for old men who had lived far longer then they should. He didn't want to be relegated to a far-flung outpost where he would fight for the benefit of those same old men.

The alternative was potentially worse, fleeing from the wars, fleeing from his home, and escaping through the most dangerous place in the kingdom.

It was okay

I think the narrator did great and definitely increased my opinion.
The book as a whole just did not feel completed. It was a smooth ride but never felt it had a climax. Also I disliked the main character at the beginning and at the very end only appreciated the growth but then it was over and I never got the growth proven or tested.

Fantastic!!!

Great Story and Narration!

Eric is forced away from his dream of being a bartender, and into the role of a battle mage. Forced to attend the Mage Academy, barely trained, and scheduled to go to the front lines of a pointless war, he has the choice of forever being a pawn or risking it all by deserting into the Underdark.

Wonderful narration by Doug!

I absolutely loved this audio book, and can't wait to find out what happens in the next one!!!

What a amazing book

I love the story. I love MC. The world is interesting as it's being unfolded, hell I'll definitely follow this series if it continues.

Good Listen.

I was pleasantly surprised. The book has a good progression with the magick. It is worth a credit. I look forward The the next in the series. It does come across from a juvenile point of view sometimes. But is from the point of view of a youngish boy. It is a good Listen for youth and adult listeners.

Doug Tidale was great as always.

Good but

I enjoyed the book, but I recommend waiting for more of this series as there is no real end to the story.

Great read.

I absolutely loved the POV of the story. The subtle facts dabbed in the book although give the story a slow start it does a wonderful job introducing a character given them a intricate backstory and gives them a reasonable excuse to be different than the mold. All around if you are reading this comment you should get this book as it worth the listen through especially with the great voice acting giving the character even more individuality.

I was very board

I loved his traveling dungeon series, but this book seemed slow and boaring. Can't wait for his next book.
