Publisher's summary

Love has been driven out of our workplaces. How do we get it back in?

We're in the middle of an epidemic of stress and anxiety. Average life expectancy in the US is down. At work, less than sixteen percent of us are fully engaged. In many high-stress jobs such as distribution centers, emergency room nursing, and teaching, incidences of PTSD are higher than veterans returning from war zones.

We are getting something terribly wrong. Our workplaces fail utterly to provide for or capitalize on one of our most basic human needs: our need for love.

As Marcus Buckingham shows in this eye-opening, uplifting book, love is an energy, and it must flow. It demands expression—and that expression is "work." There's no learning without love, no innovation, no service, no sustainable growth. Love and work are inextricable.

Buckingham first starkly highlights the contours of our loveless work lives and explains how we got here. Next, he relates how we all develop best in response to another human being. What does a great work relationship look like when the other person is cued to your loves? Finally, he shows how you can weave love back into the world of work, and how to make this a discipline for the rest of your life.

Love + Work powerfully shows why love must come first at work, and how we can make this happen.

Thank you for transparency and insight in loving!

What a wonderful, altruistic, and assiduous book that is impacting and extremely relevant!
Thank you for taking the time to share intimate information about your family that we all can relate too or are living in and providing thoughts and direction that may help.
I now have ideas on how to love myself and others, especially my child for who they are!
It is greatly appreciated my friend!

10 stars

I would give this 10 stars if it were an option. This is not my first Marcus Buckingham book, and I have enjoyed others, this is life altering. This book has me looking for my red threads, and wanting to know me, for me, and not the me everyone expects, or even I expect. And if you find this review confusing, get the book. It is funny and insightful and poignant, and I wish I had found this 20 years ago.

Insightful, challenging, provoking, and intriguing

I am a 60 year old reader with three adult children 4 grandchildren, and still raising our 17 year old adopted daughter. I have a lot of experience in life and enjoy reading so I purchased this book to read and gain new insights that would help my team at work. Not only was it insightful, it was also challenging, provoking, and intriguing for work and family life. Each member of my work world approaches life differently. Each family member has very different loves, motivations, passions, and needs that make up who they are, My regret is that I did not have access to this book 40 years ago as I would have raised my family differently. I would have encouraged difference’s with better understanding. I would have approached my own decisions with an improved mindset. I have given the book to several others to help them be better fathers, better employees, stronger people. Thanks for the book Marcus.

Brilliant insights from a Passionate Truth Seeker.

This book is designed to upend conventional thinking about work. Gone are the days of “fitting in” and conformity; now, more than ever, companies that thrive in the global marketplace rely on the unique, individual strengths and talents of their employees. By enabling people to focus on what they love in their work, we can transform the workplace, and the human experience.

Great audio book

Marcus really has a way of connecting and takes you through the book elegantly. I bought the hardcover so I can quote from it. I might even listen to it again! Great references to connect on the “why” at work!

I wish I had this earlier in life.

Read it. Listen to it. Whatever you need to do to get it in your brain and leave it to stew for a while. I will be sharing this with others.
