About this listen

Hard Luck. Location: north of the Arctic Circle. Population: 150 (mostly men!) But the three O'Halloran brothers, who run a bush-plane charter service called Midnight Sons, are heading a campaign to bring women to town.

Daddy's Little Helper

Mitch Harris is a friend of the O'Hallorans, and he's responsible for law and order in Hard Luck. He's also the widowed father of a little girl - although he never talks about his marriage. But it's not long before seven-year-old Chrissie decides that her new teacher, Bethany Ross, is the perfect candidate for wife and mom!

Because of the Baby

Matt Caldwell, Charles O'Halloran's brother-in-law, is an easygoing charmer, still in love with his ex-wife. Karen's still in love with him, too. Her reaction to him the night of his sister's wedding certainly proved that. It also left her pregnant.... Now Matt wants her to marry him again - and not just because of the baby!

Great Series

I love the picture painted in this series. It feels like this little Alaska town is really there waiting for a visit. The character development and the way the setting is established brings everything to life.

great story, but strange performance

The story is great. I love it just as much as the other midnight sons stories. My only issue with this audiobook is the narrator / performer makes the main female character (Karen) have a very strange whiney little girl's voice. It is what you would expect an imitation of a whiney and bratty 6 year old girl to be like. It's not the writing, it's just the voice. I tried to look past it, but it was a struggle to make it to the end.

Midnight Sons

Debbie wrote these a while ago but I still enjoy listening to them. Very clean, PG/G rated. Wonderful narration, great story and easy to listen to. The whole series is worth a listen!

Characters keeps you coming back for more

When you hear Debbie wrote it in her early years, you know it's going to be all heart and alot of realistic characters.
She never disappoints her audience. The characters are like they are right there and you are the fly watching it, experiencing the emotions and living the days.
I could listen to her novels day in and day out, And I have, and enjoyed each one.
The Narrator is spot on as well, capturing you with the emotions and realistic words.

More above the Arctic Circle

Two stories- Daddy’s Little Helper and Because Of The Baby are books three and four of six set in the world of Hard Luck, Alaska.
Very Light reading with minimal sexiness going on.
Miller does an ok job of narration.

Meh

This audiobook, Midnight Sons volume 2, contains books 3 and 4 of the Midnight Sons series. I liked book 3 better than book 4.
Book 3: Daddy's Little Helper - 3 Stars
Daddy's Little Helper is book 3 of the Midnight Sons series. This book had a lot going on. The audiobook is only 5 hours in length and it bounces around from plot to plot with each of the couples. There are 2 main storylines in this book, 1 lead in storyline for the next book, and then some other minor subplots with couples we already know and other characters that we've met in the prior books.

The main storyline in Daddy's Little Helper is a relationship forming between single father and widow, Mitch, and Hard Luck's new teacher, Bethany. Mitch's 7 year old daughter immediately connects with Bethany and tries playing matchmaker. The other main storyline is the true reason why Bethany accepted a job in Hard Luck.

The narration is fine. The voices in this book were good for the characters.

Book 4: Because of the Baby - 2-2.5 stars
Because of the Baby is book 4 in the Midnight Sons series. This is my least favorite of the series. I don't know if that is more because of the characters and the writing or if it is due to the voices that the narrator used.

There were a few subplots in this book and it bounces around between the various couples, but the main storyline was about Karen and Matt. They were married but divorced 2 years prior and still love each other. After not seeing each other for almost 2 years, they reconnected at a family member's wedding and had a one night stand that resulted in a pregnancy. So then they reconnected and the story goes from there.

I struggled with the characters and didn't particularly like either of them. Matt was dense and Karen was obnoxious. She expects that just because she gets upset, Matt should automatically know and understand why and she shouldn't have to tell him. It was quite annoying. Plus Matt was emotionally immature. He loved her but beyond that he was helpless.

The narration didn't do it for me in this book. Karen sounded whiny the whole time and it grated on my nerves. I think the voice made her less likable. I think, had I read it instead of listened, I would have liked her more. Matt's voice was annoying too. He sounded like an airhead and a teenager.

Overall, not my favorite and I doubt I will listen again. 2-2.5 stars. I don't think I will continue with this series. The ongoing setup for Christian and Mariah's book over the past couple books has gotten old. I don't even care to see how their story will turn out because Christian is just rude and childish to her.

Disappointing

I didn't like these books as much as the first two in the series. Neither the characters nor the story appealed.
