LitRPG means Literary Role Playing Game. Simply put, it’s the book version of watching someone play a video game, usually one that’s set up like an MMO (massively multiplayer online) RPG. It’s a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, depending on how it comes to be that our main character ends up living inside a virtual reality. the point of LitRPG is not how we get there, but that we get to be in this virtual reality period, living life as a badass video-game character. Beat the grind and submerse yourself in these addictive LitRPGs.

Engaging Humor • Immersive Worldbuilding • Excellent Narration • Flawed Likeable Protagonist • Entertaining Action

This was a pleasantly surprising addition to the LitRPG genre. While some of the usual tropes emerged, this was unique enough to stand apart. It was well written and lacked the crassness that often emerges in these stories.

The narration was an... unusual choice. It took some time to adapt to the deadpan narration but I grew to enjoy it and found that it fit well with the wry humor found throughout.

A nice change of pace

I actually just finished the 3rd book in this series so feel pretty comfortable about writing a review.

In general this is a fun litrpg series that doesn't take itself too seriously. The humor is sarcastic, quick, and crass at times. The profanity is strong, but it's also part of the humor style. It's easy to relate to for someone like me that is an older demographic and kind of grew up with this kind of humor among friends. The narrator is absolutely fantastic with his tone and timing in reading the material, and I can totally see him as the MC. Seriously amazing job! I found myself laughing out loud on more than a few occasions at the quips and jokes the MC and his supporting cast toss at each other (particularly the otters), it's extremely entertaining and part of the real reason this series is worth a read I think.

This is NOT a harem series (at least not so far), so don't expect any kind of romance or sexual trysts. In fact, having just read book three the MC has still not had even one romantic interest (though there might be inklings of one perhaps sparking in the 3rd book).

In terms of rpg the elements are kind of weak and the MC is completely overpowered too soon. In very short order in the first book the MC goes from zero to demi-god strength. However, the author does balance a lot of his abrupt power with his obvious impulsiveness and lack of critical thinking. It's pretty refreshing at times to just sit back and watch the bull in the china shop go nuts. There are folks that will complain that's this is yet another litrpg where the MC is an idiot that doesn't really take full advantage of their powers or makes stupid decisions. However it does seem rather intentional that the MC is not perfect or particularly bright in that regard, and hence allows some flexibility for the author to have some fun having him make rash decisions. The rpg system and monsters are based loosely on standard dnd so pretty easy to relate to.

The story itself is slightly interesting, although I get the sense at times the author appears to be just making stuff up on the fly regarding the gods and the politics of the world. Much of the reason for his power creep appears hacked on at times by some of these half explained elements just to help speed along the progression which seems a little lazy. However the supporting characters and well detailed locations do have some depth so that does keep the world at least a little more immersive and the story not overly shallow.

Probably the only criticism I have is the rather short nature of each book and how all three books thus far appear to have been one book originally but were cut up in order to maximize profit. I understand the author needs some kind of return, but whoever made the decision to break it up wasn't thinking too well. It would have been better to make the first book free and then combine the other two into one, or just make it one large book. As it is now each book ends on an obvious chapter break and each new book starts without any real transition between chapters which makes it pretty obvious.

Overall though I am very much enjoying this series and highly recommend it to anyone looking for something light and entertaining.

As other reviewers have stated don't let the short run time fool you. This book is great. The story is intriguing and is a different take on litRPG's. It takes out a lot of the "filler" information out that other 20 hour + books have.

The story starts off great and continues to have good momentum throughout the story. The character, despite a few "duh" moments, grows on you and you learn to love him and understand his predicament.

The narrator was also amazing. I enjoyed this book and will be getting the next one!

Short but AWESOME

Had low expectations, surprisingly enjoyable. Wish/hope the author abbreviates the “status” paragraph going forward. The repetitiveness get to be a bit much after awhile. Otherwise good story and narration. Will try the next book as well.

Enjoyable.

Mr Ugland is a hilarious writer and very witty with dialogue. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I listened to the audio all the way through, and got done before the sun set. I could not press pause!
