About this listen

Penelope Akk wants to be a superhero. She's got superhero parents. She's got the ultimate mad science power, filling her life with crazy gadgets that even she doesn't understand. She has two superpowered best friends. In middle school the line between good and evil looks clear. In real life nothing is that clear. All it takes is one hero's sidekick picking a fight, and Penny and her friends are labeled supervillains. In the process Penny learns a hard lesson about villainy: She's good at it.

Criminal masterminds, heroes in power armor, bottles of dragon blood, alien war drones, shape-shifters, and ghosts - no matter what the superpowered world throws at her, Penny and her friends come out on top. They have to. If she can keep winning, maybe she can clear her name before her mom and dad find out.

Ridiculously Enjoyable!

I honestly just purchased this book because it was on sale and I thought it might be mildly entertaining, but I loved it. It is still a kids book, and not exactly high-quality literature, but I found it engrossingly entertaining. It really scratched that itch of mine that wants to take over the world but doesn't want to hurt anyone. The inventions are so ridiculous and fun, and the narrator does such an excellent job of expressing the protagonist's squee that I couldn't help but laugh out loud, many times. The story also mostly managed to keep me from predicting its twists, though I think a lot of that was that the world allows for such ridiculous yet not quite unbelievable non-sequitors. As for morality, the story does romanticize supervillany a bit, but it doesn't romanticize evil itself. It is mostly a matter of bending the rules, and unfortunate circumstance; even most of the true villains try to avoid hurting civilians. It also could provide a good object lesson for the advantages of telling the truth early as compared to the consequences of digging yourself deeper into a lie, but you'd probably have to actually point that out to a child.

loved it

goofy, zany, funny. loved the whole book and idea behind it. altho, i really do feel so sorry for penny. i wish i could go into details but anything i say will spoil some part and this book is too good to do that to. you'll either have to listen to it or go get a hard copy to read. i hope and pray the author doesn't stop with just this book in this series.
