About this listen

With one simple myth, nations burned. Under the Almighty, an empire has been forged, bringing peace to the once-divided continent. But now, a spark of truth threatens to ignite the religion of lies.

Chapman unknowingly brought the Seventh Precinct to their demise. Now Officer Holden Sanders, known throughout the capital city as the survivor, seeks the truth of how so many he held dear were slaughtered. But, when it comes to light his former mentor might still draw breath, the officer of God is forced to wage war against the Almighty itself.

This book took the potential from the first book and elevated it so much. this was excellent. really great to see the author settling into his style because the story he's telling is really good.

big step up from book 1

I first found Daniel Greene from his YouTube content on the Wheel of Time. I figured it would be the least I could do to try out his writing after he had given me so much entertainment for free.

From the onset this book had its hooks in me. The characters and dialogue resounded so well with me and truly felt real. As a first showing from an author it is exceptionally strong and I truly cannot wait to see how his talent builds and grows.

As a side note; I wanted to highlight how easy an author can include all different kinds of people, without lighting a signal fire. This book is a prime example of how you can write about people without making the their race or sexual orientation their only defining characteristics. Bravo.

Great first showing from a new author!

I was excited you see where Daniel would go and he did not disappoint. This was an overall improvement from his first novella. For me he has shown improvement in his ability to develop characters and get me to care about them. He still has improvement on this front that I am confident will come with more practice now.

It was great to get to see more of Avi and how she views the world. While her character isn’t fully fleshed out in terms of her relationships with those around her, we began to see more into her world and just how powerful anointed are. Holden was handled fairly believably in his launch into action propelling him out of his cycle of grief at least temporarily. I enjoyed the character overall. The name just clashes in my head with the Expanse. I also got very strong Mort (from the Dresden files) vibes from the MoT sidekick that shows up at the end with important documents for some reason it may just have been his meek demeanor. Regardless of this I enjoyed this character and hope we see more of him in the future. It was also wonderful to get to learn more about the magic in this series and see it in full effect in fights.

Finally, Khlid was a complete badass and I loved her role in that for this sequel. However, I wish we were given more insight into how these changes are affecting her psyche. This may be intentionally vague due to Khlid possibly not being aware of it at first but it just feels like there could have been more done there to help us understand her during and after her transformation into a killing machine. Even with all of my criticisms I very much enjoyed this second entry by the Disheveled Goblin in how he continued to build on the world, characters, and his own skills.

A Good Second Entry (Warning Mild Spoilers)

I never write reviews, but I'm just trying to show my support for a book series that's worth it! 💯💯💯

A great start to a very promising writing career. Great intrigue, fantastic magic system, hard hitting action sequences. Especially good if you’ve seen Daniel’s youtube videos explaining the lore. And as always, flawless execution from Reading and Kramer

Superb!

That escalated quickly! I find the balance between action and detective work a nice balance, and how dark situations get. Seriously, there are some vindictive low blows. Kate and Michael are amazing, as always. Need book 3!

Good listen

Well done Daniel! Eager to read more. Loving the world and the characters, who feel wonderfully *real*.

Excellent new author

Enjoyable but fairly predictable story & elements.

A few inconsistencies in the side’s capabilities and actions. The rebels were both extremely well connected and blind to the actions of the empire. Given the failure of the empire, I expected for consequences for the anointed to be more than “Wanna come have some fun?”

Good but could be better
