Publisher's summary

Megan is a suburban soccer mom who walked on the wild side once upon a time. Now she’s got two kids, a perfect husband, a picket fence, and a growing sense of dissatisfaction. Ray used to be a talented documentary photographer, but at the age of 40 he finds himself in a dead-end job posing as a paparazzo, pandering to celebrity-obsessed rich kids. Broome is a detective who can’t let go of a cold case - a local husband and father who disappeared 17 years ago - and spends the anniversary every year visiting a house frozen in time, the missing man’s family still waiting, his slippers left by the recliner as if he might show up at any moment to step into them.

Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past never truly fades away. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all. And as each confronts the dark side of the American dream - the boredom of a nice suburban life, the excitement of temptation, the desperation and hunger that can lurk behind even the prettiest façades - they will discover the hard truth that the line between one kind of life and another can be as whisper-thin as a heartbeat.

Master of domestic suspense Harlan Coben delivers his trademark combination of page-turning thrills and unrivaled insight into the dark shadows that creep into even the happiest communities.

Wish I'd gotten the unabridged version

I love any Harlen Coben's book read by Scott Brick so much and can't get enough. I didn't realize that this was an abridged version of the book until I was done listening to it and regretting not getting the unabridged one. I felt that it ended so quickly.

I don't care what anyone else says about Coben's story being far fetched or Scott Brick being over dramatic, I am a huge fan. I keep looking for his books that are narrated by Scott Brick, but there is not enough of them. I wish Scott Brick re-read all his books, because I really don't want his great books to be ruined by not perfect readers.

I would highly recommend this one as any others of this duo.

A short, good, unpredictable mystery.

The narration was on point. I enjoyed the story, especially the ending. I like when I can not tell who done it. Nice job. I like this author, and will read more from em.

Intricate plot

Scott Brick is one of the best readers around. Harlan Coben is unlike many writers who have a standard plot and just change the people and location. His books are each unique and original.

A Real Page-turner

I really enjoyed the story. There were lots of twists that kept my attention. The only problem I had was with the reader. The story kept my attention, but the narration made it a little challenging. I liked his different emotions when he was reading the dialog of the characters, but if he could put that much feeling into the narration he would have made it more enjoyable. He was a bit too monotone in his reading.

I think I am addicted to Harlan Coben books

As usual I was not disappointed, the story was great with its twists and turns, i do believe I am becoming addicted to Harlan Coben books my husband agrees with that not necessarily with a smile on his face. And the narrator Scott Brick has a way to make the story even more , how should I put that , exciting, dramatic oh well he makes the perfect narrator . So yes I would recommend this book .

Entertaining

This novel contains all the ingredients needed to make an exciting reading adventure. Narrated beautifully too.

a trashy novel

I hate to write a bad review, especially after all the work that must go into writing a novel. However, when I think of an author writing drivel like this, and an audience that seems to drink it up, I can't help but reflect upon the amount of time and energy that is wasted, and the mental flatulation that is the result.

"Why did the author write this book?" I kept asking myself.

After I was done reading, my conclusion was that: the author wrote this book, because he set out to write a book.

He may have started out with: a murder mystery, a sleazy strip joint and bar, a weak detective, a soccer mom who longs for the seedy underground, and a wrongly convicted man who still blames himself after 17 years of incarceration(huh?). No thanks, don't want to visit, and certainly do not want to live here.

The premise, without giving much away, is a really enjoyable (but not) serial killer who gets away with murder, until they 'figure it out'. The 'humanity' is present in this novel, but it is a dark and ugly one, without the 'nobility' that takes us out of the morass and makes life worth living.

I cannot recommend this book.

Beware-Abridged Version

Harlen Coben is one of my favorite authors. Scott Brick is one of my favorite narrators. I bought this audiobook and right at the beginning it said “abridged”. By abridged it’s half as long as the unabridged version. Very disappointing. I located the unabridged version. Neither description mentioned abridged in the description. So, yes, I wasted 2 credits on the same story. As far as I know this is the first time in more than 7 years I ended up with an abridged audiobook. Booooo!! Hopefully I’ll have a better review for the “real” version
