About this listen
Viv isn’t known for telling the truth, but she’s not lying about having an evil doppelganger.
After spending the summer wracked with guilt about causing the accident that killed her little sister, ambitious gamer and chronic liar Viv returns to Twitch streaming. She never told her parents the truth about the accident, but she hopes that maybe making it big in streaming and giving the money to them is penance enough for her mistakes.
The weekend before school starts, Viv finds the perfect horror game to make her Twitch comeback, and during an offline practice run, an NPC asks Viv for a secret. She decides to tell them the truth about her sister’s death since a game could never share her secret―in doing so, she accidentally welcomes a demonic mimic into her life.
No one believes Viv when she tells them about her evil doppelganger. Viv has lied to get her best friend’s sympathy and has spread rumors for attention, so why should anyone trust her now? The only person who believes her is Ash, a cute social outcast whom Viv once bullied. In trying to clear her name and kill the mimic, Viv discovers that her lies have hurt people who never deserved it, herself included.

Story
The three Maxwell siblings keep their distance from the lily-white gated enclave outside Dallas where they grew up. When their family moved there, they were the only Black family in the neighborhood. The neighbors acted nice enough, but right away bad things, scary things—the strange and the unexplainable—began to happen in their house. Maybe it was some cosmic trial, a demonic rite of passage into the upper-middle class. Whatever it was, the Maxwells, steered by their formidable mother, stayed put, unwilling to abandon their home, terrors and trauma be damned.

Story
Marshall is still trying to put the pieces together after the death of her husband. After she is involved in a terrible accident, her editor sends her to the small, backwards town of Raeford to investigate a clearly ridiculous rumor: that a horse has given birth to a healthy, human baby boy. When Marshall arrives in Raeford, she finds an insular town that is kinder to the horses they are famous for breeding than to their own people. But when two horribly mangled bodies are discovered in a field—one a horse, one a human—she realizes that there might be a real story here.

At a meatpacking facility in the Missouri Ozarks, Dee-Dee and her coworkers kill and butcher 40,000 chickens in a single shift. The work is repetitive and brutal, with each stab and cut a punishment to her hands and joints, but Dee-Dee's more concerned with what is happening inside her body. After a series of devastating miscarriages, Dee-Dee has found herself pregnant, and she is determined to carry this child to term. Dee-Dee fled the Pentecostal church years ago, but judgment follows her in the form of regular calls from her mother.

Story
Every night, in the college’s ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story. One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn’t there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be. But who dug it, and for whom?

Iðunn is in yet another doctor's office. She knows her constant fatigue is a sign that something's not right, but practitioners dismiss her symptoms and blood tests haven't revealed any cause. When she talks to friends and family about it, the refrain is the same—have you tried eating better? exercising more? establishing a nighttime routine? She tries to follow their advice, buying everything from vitamins to sleeping pills to a step-counting watch. Nothing helps. Until one night Iðunn falls asleep with the watch on, and wakes up to find she’s walked over 40,000 steps in the night.

Story
Tamar Glass fled an abusive mother when she was eighteen, running away from home to find a better life elsewhere. She has lived in freedom from her mother, Ruth, for decades, until one night she wakes to find her now-elderly mother standing over her bed, disoriented and confused. When Tamar reluctantly takes in her mother, strange events start happening inside her home: the house is oppressively hot, lights flicker, and cupboards open and shut on their own.

Creepy doppelgängers and twitch streamers
The narrator did a great job at really portraying the emotion of every scene. Some parts had my heart racing waiting for evil doppelgänger to make a move, while others had me sitting down connecting with the characters and their struggle. Overall a great story to start out creepy fall listens. 1000% will recommend!

Underlying tension
The narrator was amazing. This book was so good. My first ever YA book. It has horror, angst, and sitting at the edge of your seat. The underlying tension is what really made this book amazing!

Tense, insightful young-adult horror story.
My daughter (late teens) and I (early 50s) listened to Such Lovely Skin together over a few days and really enjoyed it, plus I found it very thought provoking.
Probably the thing that made the story most enjoyable for us was how flawed and relatable the characters seemed. This helped the horror elements feel more threatening, and generally kept us on the edge of our seats.
Viv, in particular, starts from a place of great sadness and guilt due to bad decisions, must fight for her life and sanity against a truly awful supernatural force, and (without giving away too much) ends up taking responsibility for her mistakes in the end. That’s a long and painful journey, but we both thought Such Lovely Skin really nailed this.
I also found the story thought provoking because the characters’ physical and virtual lives are entangled in a way that really amps up the tension and mystery. Instead of helping them be more capable and aware, technology leaves them vulnerable and unsure of themselves. Which I suppose is where most of us are these days, and I think it’s rare for fiction to deliver this so effectively.
Anyway: We loved Such Lovely Skin, and we hope you do, also.
Also: Great narrator. I think she was a perfect fit for Viv.
