About this listen

A comprehensive book explaining "applied RPGs"—using role-playing games therapeutically.

Across the globe, therapists are using tabletop roleplaying games (RPG) such as Dungeons & Dragons as a part of their practice. This book provides an overview of what RPGs are and what makes them such an effective and powerful tool for therapy. By examining research on gaming, flow, immersion, and role-play, listeners will gain a better understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and how to skillfully and ethically use RPGs in their own practices. The author also looks at the history of RPGs, specifically focusing on issues of diversity and representation to help providers understand some possible pitfalls that exist within the medium. The book utilizes an example group to walk through everything from conception, planning, running, documentation, and termination of the group.

I expect that more literature will be coming out for this topic, but I have to say that thus far this is the best I've read on the topic of using Table-Top Role Playing Games as a therapeutic modality. The author brings in a lot of existing literature, citing all her sources in the physical copy of the book, which for me read in a very fluid and organic way, that did well to support her argument.

A compelling argument, backed by research.

everything here is great but there's not a lot here. The need for more research and assessment of efficacy is clear. I think I would have appreciated for case examples.

I have been playing ttrpgs for about 20 years. And in that time, I felt tremendous personal growth in areas of listening, empathy, and decision making. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing there is official research being done to utilize games as therapy. This book was excellent, and I look forward to any new emerging research!

Excited for the Future!
