Publisher's summary

Best-selling author and award-winning adventurer Ross Edgley has been studying the art of resilience for years, applying all he has learned to become the first person in history to swim all the way round Great Britain, breaking multiple world records along the way. Now, Ross turns his attention to mental strength and Stoicism.

Ross Edgley famously ran a marathon pulling a 1.4-tonne car and climbed a rope the height of Everest (8,848 m), after living with Yamabushi warrior monks in Japan and partaking in Shamanic pain rituals with fire ants in the Amazon jungle. On his epic 1,780-mile journey around Great Britain, which lasted 157 days, Ross swam through giant jellyfish, arctic storms, ‘haunted’ whirlpools and polluted shipping lanes, going so hard, and so fast, his tongue fell apart.

Ross’ previous book, The World’s Fittest Book, was a Sunday Times number one best seller and explored the science of physical fitness. Now, in The Art of Resilience, Ross uses his swim experience and other amazing endurance feats, where he managed to overcome seemingly insurmountable pain, hardship and adversity, to study the performance of extreme athletes, military and fitness specialists and psychologists to uncover the secrets of mental fitness and explore the concept of resilience, persistence, valour and a disciplined mind-set in overcoming adversity. This groundbreaking work represents a paradigm shift in what we thought the human body and mind were capable of and will give you a blueprint to become a tougher, more resilient and ultimately better human - whatever the challenge you face.

Editorial reviews

Be inspired by the daring, arduous journeys and death-defying feats of world-renowned adventurer Ross Edgley and build your own resilience to tackle challenges, both great and small.

Ross Edgley is famous for his astounding exploits—running a marathon while pulling a 1.4-tonne car, climbing a rope the height of Everest and becoming the first person in history to swim around Great Britain among them. In The Art of Resilience, he recounts his greatest adventures, drawing you into his world right from the first chapter. Narrating his words himself in this thrilling audiobook, Edgley also lets you in on how he built his mental grit and then drew on it to develop phenomenal physical stamina. In a no-nonsense yet engaging style, Edgley explains how anyone can master the ancient concepts of persistence and stoicism, applying them to everyday life. As the author shows, his approach to mental toughness can help you keep things in perspective, find inner strength and, ultimately, achieve things you never thought possible.

Feel your heart leap in your chest and a sense of quiet determination settle into your soul as you listen to Edgley talk about his daunting feats of endurance. You’ll especially be gripped by his gritty, evocative descriptions of his encounters with giant jellyfish, formidable storms, and more as he shares the story of what became known as the Great British Swim.

A journey for the ages

This was an excellent book l, that was well narrated by Ross regarding his own story. Research and explanations are used throughout to provide a scientific basis of decisions that were made on the adventure. All the other bits of fun and adventure are added in too. I have listened to podcasts he has done and his other book and this is by far the best book. Sometimes the basic explanations of physical activity science are tedious if you understand these too a higher level. But all round a very good book.

a great read and a great mission.

I truly enjoyed this book and its story, and throughout the time listening to it, I also implemented a lot of the actions and practices Ross used into my own training. Needless to say I am now on a mission to find my challenge. God Bless Ross Edgely.

Great lessons

Liked a lot the attitude of applying the lessons to a person’s life. Not only to learn them.

Incredible life story with unimaginable teachings

Remarkable journey through Ross was impeccably written, spoken, and most importantly lived. I personally was inspired by the experience he faced and overcame through the lessons taught in an intangible way. Best Book read of 2020!!!

5 Stars Isn’t Enough!

I got so much more out of this book than I anticipated.
It was a great story that kept me engaged from start to finish, but I learned more than I thought I would on mindset, training, nutrition, stoic philosophy, and so much more, all leading to the art of resilience. This book is worth the read and has made it on to my yearly reading list so I don’t forget the invaluable principles learned from this book.
