Publisher's summary

Dirk never wanted to end up on Zaroff's island. He'd cheated and lied, stole and tricked, begged and crawled, all to save his own life, one payment at a time.

But now the debt's come due, and Dirk missed his payments. He must muster every ounce of guile and strength at his disposal, must embrace the supernatural powers he'd struggled with for so long, must call upon allies both old and new to face the most terrifying foe a man can face. . .

The consequences of his own actions.

He doesn't know if he'll survive, but he won't go down without a fight.

A villain worthy of his moniker.

Dirk went through it in this one, it took a dead man to bring him sense, and he faces a foe worthy of the name Zahrov. An excellent performance from the narrator, and an excellent story from the author.

Not what I expected, but still very good!

Narrator was great. The story drew me in, but I have to admit that it took a very different track than what I was expecting after finishing the prequel. One thing that threw me off was that in the very first part of the book, the character is having a disjointed conversation where you just hear bits and pieces, for a while. I thought there was something wrong with the audiobook, and I was missing some of the dialogue, but it was intentional. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Great story, and the best narrator ever!

I really did love the story, and I'm going to immediately look for the third in the series. but, I should note, what makes it even more special is the narrator, Scott Aiello! I'm sure I will go forward and listen to any book that he narrates..

Well written conclusion ? to the Dirk Cooper story

Perhaps it is the end perhaps it isn't. I think it could go either way but the book is so well written and the story so neatly sewn together it could end here and it would be a good ending. I enjoyed this book greatly, Dirk and the rest of the characters are well written and plot line is not as predictable as you might think. I highly recommend both books in this series and will watch to see if there is a third.

This is a great series I stumbled upon! Can't wait for book 3! Author and narrator are amazing. Also, I want a cookies and cream!

Hard to Rate This One

I really enjoyed the first book, but this one was hard to swallow at times. I think I was mostly disappointed in how Dirk approached his problem. I saw Dirk as a fairly crafty and intelligent person who could read other people well so I was thinking and hoping this was going to be a book about him outsmarting the colonel. It wasn't. Furthermore, his actions at some points seemed very unlikely for the sake of the later plot, which is something that annoys me above all else with some fiction.

With all that said, if you ignore how we get there, the later part of the book was interesting and it did seem satisfying, if not still very unlikely. The real hero of the book, though, was Cookies-N-Cream. His parts were masterful and I really loved his relationship with Dirk.

In the end, this was almost a three star rating, but I asked myself if I would read the next book when it was available and had to answer, "Yes," so it squeaks by with a four.

cookies and cream

by far the poltergeist is my favorite character. the protagonist is quite the trip too though. I get sucked into the story every time I listen to it, the narrator is the perfect, sardonic match for the book. my only complaint is that there are only 2 books! I need more paranormal, grifting and showdowns!

Absolutely incredible

I discovered Matthew Howry through his other series, Ben's Damn Adventure, but quite frankly this series is way better. Urban fantasy is the perfect outlet for Matthew Howry's unique brand of humor and I love this series so very much. I'm rather sad that there's only two books out. Honestly, I feel like the other series is a bit too over the top and it's hard to keep track of, while Dirk Cooper is incredibly well thought out, thought provoking, hilarious, and downright interesting. I hope that the next Dirk Cooper book comes out soon because I just can't wait. Meanwhile, I just don't find myself enjoying Ben's Damn Adventure nearly as much. This series is just so good in comparison. It's so well researched and clearly planned out. I love it.
