A strong plot twist in the end.

Great story all around, with strong battles, great character development, and great plot development.

Awesome Ending to a GREAT Series!!!

What a seriously magnificent ending to a really really well written series. What a hella adventure and with an ending I didnt see coming at all! This was a tale of heroes and love, of darkness and evil, of truths and lies. I hated that it ended and I lost some very beloved characters, but what a great way to go....,as legends. Oh... I almost forgot, I was gifted this book for my thoughts and well, just cant say enough how really good this series is. If you are reading this review, read the books! I promise you will thank me later!

Another great book in the series

I really love this series and I was excited to get my hands on another book! This one didn't disappoint either. It's full of excitement and leaves you on the edge of your seat. I cannot wait to see what happens next

I really enjoyed the whole series

I really enjoyed. I did find it hard to keep straight such a book cast of characters. I had to back up sometimes once I realized who the character was to understand where they were and what their mission was. I will be reading more by this author for sure!

Great series

Overall this was a great series. I had a little bit of a problem keeping all the names straight for a while, so will listen to the four book series again. Yes it was good enough to listen to it more than once!

Stunning 💚

In summary The Giants Spear is complex, action packed and suspense filled from start to finish. Battle rages, with terrible losses and brave stands,  clever twists and turns making a delightfully unpredictable story.

Jamie Edmundson is one brilliant writer.

Narration was excellent.

Wow! Amazing end to a great series.

Very surprising end. Fantastic series. Characters you will hate to leave behind, a great story, epic fantasy. The end will blow you away. Start the series with Toric's Dagger. I received a free review copy of the audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Very tropey.

(review for the while series). Characters rarely make meaningful decisions. Weird combat where distance sometimes feels strange. Foreshadowing from the series goes in weird and uninteresting directions.

That being said I've read worse, and the world is really cool.

An improbable and unsatisfying ending to the series

The first three books of the trilogy took their time to build up the lore and set the stage for this “Final Showdown”. It was akin to having stretched a rubber band painstakingly slowly in anticipation of that huge release when you get to see the rubber band fly majestically off into the horizon… only the rubber band never takes flight. It snaps on your fingers and falls to the floor in the blink of an eye.

This review is only targeted towards this penultimate episode of the Weapon Taker’s Saga. I found the other three books somewhat enjoyable but this conclusion seems poorly thought out and rushed to the point where the story collapses under its own pace (much like the widely despised Final Season of HBO’s Game of Thrones).

Characters that you’ve followed for thousands of pages and dozens of hours (whether having read the series or listened to the audiobook) get glossed over, even in the Epilogue. You’re left scratching your head, thinking: “Was that it? What exactly was the purpose of this character for this entire time??”

This is not to say that this book did not have its moments. It certainly does. But the ending leaves much of the fate of Dalriya in question. It is possible that was by design, perhaps to pave the way for a sequel saga? I just don’t know. And that’s where all of the tension leading up to this point just collapses like a snapped rubber band. You’re anticipating a particular trajectory when you shoot this rubber band and instead, it goes nowhere. When I heard the audiobook narrator suddenly intone: “Epilogue…”, I jumped up and tore my headphones off and exclaimed “WTF!?”

The motivations of the characters seem contrary to the image of them that I had built in my mind for the last three books. These aren’t the characters you’re looking for (Jedi finger waving). Their behaviors and actions are not given the time to coalesce (the way you saw Theron slowly change). Characters who’ve been dependably predictable suddenly seem to lose their minds and act completely differently at the turn of a page. And then, they’re written out without any further explanation.

There was only one instance where that worked: When the Emperor contemplated his situation on the ridge and decided that he had put other people in harm’s way for too long and that his moment had come to finally be remembered by historians as “Bloody Baldwin”, slayer of 200,000 Drobax. That was a rather sudden turn of events but you could follow the dotted line through the story and see how the months of enduring siege after siege pushed him to this. It was well done and I cheered for him.

But others? Others who were so careful and methodical and calculating? Suddenly, they snap their fingers and say: “Hmm… effff it! Let’s see what happens if I do X, Y and Z.” That’s not a plot twist. That is just sloppy writing.

Performance: It was decently done. The Krykker voices grate on your ears, and the sing-song interpretation of the Caladri make me grate my teeth. But still, having a male performer do male voices and vice versa is an innovation that other audiobook publishers should try. It’s really all that kept me engaged throughout a very vanilla saga that was too heavy on political info-dumping and too light on character development.
