The Girl That Got Away

The Girl That Got Away
: Marin Montgomery

This is the first book I have listened to from this author. The plot is interesting, grabbing the listener from the start. As you read / listen you are spun in many directions. There are multiple suspects that come under scrutiny. It makes you wonder who is good and who is bad. It kept me on edge until the end.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. I really liked the duel narration by Grace Paunescu and D. Michael Hope. I hope to find more from them in the future.

Worth the read

I enjoyed everything about this book. It is always fun to read a book where you are offered a number of possible criminals. The performance was excellent and added to the enjoyment of the book. The story was excellent except for one thing. The thoughts attributed to the 14 year old girl were way too mature for a 14 year old. Most 14 year olds are more mature than their age but not this mature of a thought process. I think 16 years old would be much more accurate and believable.

Monotone narration

This book is something I may have to just read. The audio is bad sounds like listening to two robots.

Great mystery and suspense!

Absolutely loved this one! Great narration, fantastic storyline. Goes back and forth between two characters and two periods in time as the story unravels, giving you bits and pieces at a time. I had a pretty good idea of what was going on about halfway through, but it does twist and turn a lot. No spoilers! Listened to this one on a very long drive and it was perfect for the road trip. Definitely recommend! *** This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.***

Suspenseful and intriguing!

Great psychological thriller. Impossible to put down this book! The characters are intriguing. All the characters are well described, well developed and intriguing. The storyline is fast-paced, suspenseful and captivating, filled with many twists and turns. I like the POV of Henry and Avery. The ending is breathtaking and spectacular. Marin Montgomery rapidly becomes one of my favorite authors. The narration was really well done. Grace Panuescu and D. Michael Hope have both a great voice, well paced and easy to understand. I really enjoyed my listening. I'm looking forward for more books written by this author and narrated by these narrators. Mixed emotions

I had mixed emotions while listening to this book. I loved the duo POV and the two narrators did a great job. There was just so many twists and turns to this listen and so many that-did-not-just-happen moments that I never settled into it. And don't get me started on that ending!

There is plenty of intrigue and lots of subplots - some subtle, some not so much. It was an interesting listen with an interesting whodunnit. Still, it left me with mixed emotions.

Suspenseful and Engrossing

During a sleepover in their front yard, fourteen year old girls Avery and Callie are kidnapped. A day later, Avery is found naked in a totaled car by the side of the road. Henry, the man who found her, is lauded as a hero, but he's keeping secrets of his own. As she recovers in the hospital, Avery tries to piece together her memories of the night leading up to the kidnapping, hoping to remember in time to save Callie.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat, it was suspenseful and engrossing. It was written in a Dan Brown style with each chapter ending in a cliffhanger before switching to the other person's point of view. It kept me hooked and reading late into the night. When it comes to mysteries, I like clever revelations that make me rethink the entire story, rather than being bamboozled by an unreliable narrator. While I did feel a bit cheated by that, I think this one was well worth the read and I'll be checking out more of the author's books.

I liked the dual narration style, each narrator brought their own flavor to the performance. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Contrived and unrealistic

This story is told from the perspective of Avery and Henry in alternating chapters, read by Grace Paunescu and D. Michael Hope, respectively. Grace's youthful voice is appropriate as Avery, but she borders on overly dramatic in a few passages. Otherwise, both narrators perform quite satisfactorily.

Montgomery works too hard to keep the reader in suspense, making some of the action and behavior of the characters illogical and unrealistic. The story is suspenseful, but quite contrived.

SUSPENSE-FILLED PUZZLE

THE GIRL THAT GOT AWAY is a stand-alone, psychological thriller.

I enjoyed the suspense of this story and the way that each chapter ended in a mini-cliffhanger before switching to the other point of view. I liked the clever twist that was Henry/Alex. I sat in that car listening to the last two chapters instead of going into work. The final twist had me literally applauding.

I wondered why it needed to be set twenty years ago (1997). There is one reference to a pager, but that could easily be changed to a text message. This could happen anywhere and at any time.

This is the first book I have read from Marin Montgomery. In my opinion, she did an excellent job of providing suspense, puzzle, fear, and description.

Narration: I really enjoyed the dual narration style of Grace Paunescu & D. Michael Hope. They both did an excellent job.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy via Audiobook Boom, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
