About this listen

This body would be the last for Zachariah Lazarus....

The Crystal Killer’s latest casualty was discovered in a sleepy town in the Pacific Northwest, Misted Pines.

His years in the FBI, and tracking the Crystal Killer, have taken their toll on Rus. He lost his marriage to the job. And the burdens he carries for the victims was crushing him.

Misted Pines has recently survived a killer’s rampage and a town scandal that made global news. The media was primed to devour a new story. So Rus already has his work cut out for him.

But it’s more.

Something is just not right with this latest victim.

As Rus works with the local sheriff to unravel the mystery, the victim’s employer, Lucinda Bonner, decides she’s going to do everything she can to help.

To help Rus find the killer. To help Rus survive the hunt. To help Rus navigate the intricate, and sometimes sordid, history of the town of Misted Pines.

And to help Rus let go of his burdens.

Absolutely stunning narration

A who done it, serial killer, with a beautiful romance storyline. I was so happy to return to the small town of Misted Pines and more psychological drama. This narration was one of the best I’ve ever listened to.

LOVED!

4.5 Stars

Yet another hit from Kristen Ashley and the Misted Pines series! The mystery/suspense/thriller vibes of this book were top-notch. I loved how that part of this story played out. While the romance of this one was different than most Kristen Ashley books I've read, I thought it fit into this story perfectly. I loved how Rus and Cin were with each other. I loved how the two of them supported each other. I loved how Cin helped Rus realize just how important and special he was, and I loved how Rus let Cin be exactly who she was without expectation.

There is an author note at the beginning of this one, but I'm going to mention it as well: this book gets pretty detailed when it comes to the crimes being committed. If you have any triggers, be very cautious when reading this book. I think the discussion around everything in this book is handled really well, but I know it could easily be triggering to some, and it is more important for you to take care of yourself than it is to read this book.

I absolutely loved this one and am so very eager to read the next one.

I believe this is probably her best book to date. Hope we see more like this soon!

not my favorite of her books

I've read or listened to all her books to date. usually love them, although not so much the graphic sex scenes, but this book moved slower than her usual stories. the characters? fantastic and so believable.

2nd in series of new genre for KA

I’m not usually very fond of crime thrillers with such a psychological aspect but the other elements of KA’ s writing are still there: alpha male and strong intelligent female leads and supporting cast of friends and family.

Could not stop Listening

Listened to the whole story in less than 24 hours. The narrative made the story real in the moment. Touching on existing characters helped to bring everything a little closer. I did not think she could surpass the first book but I was wrong. Well done. Cannot work for another.

Loving this series!

Enjoyable read for the quality of both story and characters. You get suspense, great plot development, romance, and interesting characters, including some from book 1. If we’re lucky, there will be at least 1 more book in the series.
I really, really like that the characters are in their 40s & 50s with life experience and emotional intelligence. Sexy without being slutty.

Initially, I didn’t care for Carlson as a narrator, but he grew on me as the story progressed, but the mispronunciations were still a bit annoying. He wasn’t a perfect fit, but better to have someone outside of her usual go-to narrators. Anyone was going to be a bit disappointing after the perfection of Huber’s work on book 1.
Recommend!

A solid 4 rating for this fun story

Ok, after not liking book 1 in this series I found book 2, The Girl.in the Woods to be quite enjoyable! Likeable characters and a good storyline, narrated well by Tara Langella and especially Alan Carlson, makes this easy to rate as a solid 4. I did not give a 5 rating as that is reserved for Ms. Ashley's earlier works such as The Burg, Colorado Mountain, Chaos, Dream man etc, all of which were far superior to the more recent works. That said, I did enjoy this one and will have no problem recommending it as a good read or listen to while away an afternoon or two!
