About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Marie Moning is back with a gripping, imaginative, and seductive new series in which a young woman moves to Divinity, Louisiana, to inherit a large fortune and a Gothic mansion full of mysteries and ominous secrets...

Zo Grey is reeling from the sudden death of her mother when she receives a surprising call from an attorney in Divinity, Louisiana, with the news she has been left an inheritance by a distant relative, the terms of which he will only discuss in person. Destitute and alone, with nothing left to lose, Zo heads to Divinity and discovers she is the sole beneficiary of a huge fortune and a monstrosity of a house that sits ominously at the peak of Watch Hill—but she must live in it, alone, for three years before the house, or the money, is hers.

Met with this irresistible opportunity to finally build a future for herself, Zo puts aside her misgivings about the foreboding Gothic mansion and the strange circumstances, and moves in, where she is quickly met by a red-eyed Stygian owl and an impossibly sexy Scottish groundskeeper.

Her new home is full of countless secrets and mystifying riddles, with doors that go nowhere, others that are impossible to open, and a turret into which there is no visible means of ingress. And the townspeople are odd…

What Zo doesn’t yet know is that her own roots lie in this very house and that in order to discover her true identity and awaken her dormant powers, she will have to face off against sinister forces she doesn’t quite comprehend—or risk being consumed by them.

Excellent narrator, which in my opinion can make or break an audible:)

Karen weaves a tale that has a great balance between intense moments and all the other really important things like getting to know the characters. Beautifully written as always.

Thank you Karen for sharing your wonderful story telling gifts and making them something worth coming back for over and over. Can’t wait for the next book!!

Long Awaited

I have been waiting patiently for a long for KMM's newest book. I was totally immersed in this book from the beginning! I loved the feel of the story and loved the characters. Ro had a tough childhood. Moving from home to home. Her and her mom running from an unknown, to Ro, threat! Then tragedy strikes. In her despair she receives a message about an inheritance! So she drives to Louisiana to find out what it is. I will not put any spoilers. You must read. Perfect for Halloween! Terrific narration too.

I already want more!

This is a great new book for this author, I have loved her previous series and this one does not disappoint. A bit more introspection than I was ready for but the characters are getting built and I can’t wait to learn more.

KMM does not disappoint

I preordered this book but held off on listening to it as I am familiar with the ‘I need more’ feeling at the end of her books. As usual her writing pulls you into the book’s world and constantly keeps you guessing. As a long time reader I am pretty adept at figuring out quickly what is going to happen with most authors. While I can do this periodically with KMM I always know there is going to be an unexpected twist. Welcome back Karen and I need more!

Cannot wait for book 2!

Another excellent series coming from KMM!! I absolutely loved everything about this one, I only wish it was twice as long! Hopefully we don’t have to wait very long before the next installment to what will surely be another knockout series by Karen Marie Moning!

Side note: I love fantasy but can only get into works penned by authors who craft their stories with complexities that are articulated from a high level of intelligence. Checking out of my busy life with fantasy can feel indulgent and frivolous at times, but when authors use big fancy words I feel like I can walk away having learned a new vocabulary word or two as a bonus! I love well educated historical fiction authors for this same reason.

I enjoyed this book but…

Beware, it’s a cliffhanger. There was really nothing about this book I didn’t like. I mean, there were some questionable decisions made by some of the characters but all in all I liked them. The story was good. The narrators did a wonderful job. Just, man, I wish there was some closure in the ending.

Finally a book written well

I've been silently suffering ever since I finished the fever series. It's not like there hasn't been an explosion of books in fantasy, urban fantasy, you know, all the things. But they typically leave me mildly irritated from being written poorly.

I had zero issues here.

As always you can trust on KMM to deliver a beautifully written novel, with interesting characters and a well formed plot.

I loved this book, my only problem was that it ended too soon.

I have many questions! But the ending didn't kill me, and while the book will live in the back of my mind while I think about all of the possibilities until book 2, it isn't torturing me.

Honestly I'm just relieved and grateful to finally have a book worth reading.

Five stars.
