Publisher's summary

DeathWizards have been the scourge of Talohna for over 5000 years; they are executed at birth or hunted to the death. There are no exceptions.

Pulled by magic and blood sacrifice into a world he can't possibly begin to understand, Kael Symes soon finds himself the focus of a Talohna-wide manhunt.

Desperate and trying to stay ahead of ArchWizard Giddeon Zirakus's execution squad, Kael soon discovers that Talohna's ArchWizard may be the least of his worries. An ancient witch coven is also on the hunt for Kael, and they'll stop at nothing to find their messiah first.

Trapped far below the earth inside the long-lost Dwarven prison of Arkum Zul, Kael has few allies he can trust. After months of torture and suffering, he is quickly running out of time to recover what was stolen from him: The magic of the DeathWizard.

It's his only hope for escape.

Solid story

Good, complex story so far. I do have to say, though, that hearing Simon Vance do an American accent is pretty comical. The thing with Kael does remind me of the WoT and Rand al Thor with the whole saidar/saidin taint thing, but we'll see where it goes!

Not bad, not OC.

it's a good story, and Vance, as always did a great job. But, the book does tend to rely on the old played out tropes of the genre, budding macial powers, super charged characters, lost cities and monsters in the deep. All told, it's a good story built off a tried and true archetype, so nothing surprising either.

The story is good. The MC is a bit of a pansy.

The story is gripping, the characters believable and….. the MC is a bit of a pansy. The whole losing it when you kill somebody trope is overplayed in way too many otherwise good fiction series. A man or for that matter, a woman that won’t do violence in defense of their family or the weak is worth less than a blown tire. Same goes for someone who revels in self flagellation for doing so. Even an ardent pacifist would be quite ready to throw down if they were pulled into a fantasy world where half the critters and people are trying to kill them. It’s annoying. Thankfully, the story is absent the ultimate warrior woman to go along with the uberpansy male MC.

This wizard just used the word, "info"

Any additional comments?

He's in the traditional medieval fantasy, orch & elf setting, with the traditional British voice actor...and he's using hipster anachronisms along with "AS YOU KNOW, BOB!" exposition of the world. - The characters and their presentation is great. Unfortunately we've seen them all before and in many ways he's making sure we know we've seen it all before by relying on genre traditions almost entirely. It's a well-executed rendition of the book about a wizard in a tower with a prophecy of a "5000-year cyclical demon plague rising"... but unfortunately, it's the book about a wizard in a tower with a prophecy of a "5000-year cyclical demon plague rising". I'm just not sure I needed to buy a new book to re-read this.
