About this listen

This program includes a bonus conversation between Mary Dixie Carter and Jennifer Hillier.

Mary Dixie Carter's The Photographer is a slyly observed, suspenseful story of envy and obsession, told in the mesmerizing, irresistible voice of a character who will make you doubt that seeing is ever believing.

When perfect images...

As a photographer, Delta Dawn observes the seemingly perfect lives of New York City’s elite: snapping photos of their children’s birthday parties, transforming images of stiff hugs and tearstained faces into visions of pure joy, and creating moments these parents long for.

...are made of beautiful lies...

But when Delta is hired for Natalie Straub’s 11th birthday, she finds herself wishing she wasn’t behind the lens but a part of the scene - in the Straub family’s gorgeous home and elegant life.

...the truth will be exposed.

That’s when Delta puts her plan in place, by babysitting for Natalie; befriending her mother, Amelia; finding chances to listen to her father, Fritz. Soon she’s bathing in the master bathtub, drinking their expensive wine, and eyeing the beautifully finished garden apartment in their townhouse. It seems she can never get close enough, until she discovers that photos aren’t all she can manipulate.

“The sense of impending disaster is palpable, as the suspense and tension grow, and what happens at the end is unexpected and odd. Creepy, dark, and suspenseful...A gripping read.” (Booklist)

The story was odd

The ready had the same voice for each character and the story just seemed like there was so much left out. Delta did leave you wondering what was real and what was not but the book just left you wanting

A Must for Your Summer Reading List

I felt like I was following alongside Delta as she described each character and scene with such vivid and remarkable detail. She zooms in on the seemingly flawless characters and their architecturally stunning homes, all while casting the slightest shadows on their flaws. Delta is such a complicated character and you can't love her or hate her, which makes her all the more alluring. I was captivated by every twist and turn and this book kept me on edge to the very end. I couldn't put this book down.

Many turns and twists voiced by a twisted mind

It didn't take long to realize that the narrator had a self centered and twisted mind. Despite first person point of view character development is well done. As a photographic hobbiest I enjoyed the role played by cameras and photography in the story. The reader has the ongoing challenge of interpreting the narrators truthfulness.
I didn't see the conclusion coming.

Would recommend print

I really liked the story of this book but I agree with the others the narration was not good. I increased the speed which helped some but just kept thinking that I wished I would have gotten a hard copy of this one.

Captivating

The story is thrilling and unique, and the author reading her own novel is extraordinary. I would for Mary Dixie Carter to read every title n my library.

Pretty good thriller

It’s a pretty good thriller that keeps you guessing up until the very end. Truly skillfully performed by the author herself. Only criticism is character development. Otherwise a very nice work!

Fortunately it was free

“Protagonist” is a disturbed individual, dissatisfying outcome.
Author more interested in things!, brand names and material goods than character development.

Horrible narration

The book was fantastic. The story was great—no complaints there. The narration has to be some of the worst I’ve ever come across in my life. It made it hard to get through the book sadly.
