Publisher's summary

After some unexpected life detours, Callie Lewes is determined to complete her PhD program and figure out what to do with the rest of her life. Her laser focus is finely tuned and she's ready for total immersion in literature, subpar student essays, and all the joys that come with being a graduate teaching assistant. She has no time for, or interest in, anything else. Especially not dating.

Even if Callie were to entertain the idea of dating, she's certain it would be with someone vibrant, open, and close to her own age. Definitely not someone like Dr. Kate Jory, a new member of Pennbrook College's English department. Kate is both intimidating and a closed book. And the age difference between them is not small. But Kate is also brilliant and fascinating, and Callie is drawn to her in ways she'd never imagined possible.

Not that Kate notices. Or does she? Callie can't tell. Even though they develop an engaging and flirtatious friendship, Callie struggles to work up the courage to put herself directly in Kate's romantic path—wary of the type of fire she suspects their sparks could ignite.

Better Than Expected

Having worked as a TA in my PhD program, I found the detail in this area to be tedious. However, I really enjoyed the story. The longing and the push-me-pull-you between the two was spot on.

The Roads Left Behind Us

I enjoyed this one😊

If you like a slow burn, hot and cold, age-gap, academia romance - then this should be right up your alley. Yes, it sounds very angsty (in a good way), but Kate and Callie have such great chemistry. They keep you engaged with their flirty and playful interactions. And when things start to heat up...🥵🤌

I look forward to reading more from Kat Jackson.

And great job to Lila Winters for narrating 👏👏👏

Good enough by the end

This was a really slow start for me. Maybe it was the slow narration, but I almost gave up on it. Then it sort of took off and I was invested in seeing it through.
Something about the narrator that I just didn’t like. The pace was slow, but something else I just wasn’t sold on.
In the end, I’m happy I didn’t give up on it. Overall it was a good book and I’m not sorry I bought it, but could have been better.

Loved it

Great slow burn. The only thing I’d like different is if the narrator differed on the voices more.

Very Cute Romance

The connection was cute between the two main characters. My frustration was with the juvenile behavior of her best friends. It also brought in some other characters that I felt were not completely integrated into the story in a way that added to the overall story. The epilogue could have been more robust unless a sequel is planned. All in all I recommend this book. The narration was well done as well.

What was the point of all the conflict?

The story is of a professor and an older (34 yo) phd seeking TA being into each other, but the professor doesnt want to be together because of her supervisory position and their age difference. So much angst and hurt feelings because of the professor's choice, for them to just say screw it and get together anyway in the end...and they also face no consequences in their workplace! The whole thing felt like a waste of time in the end. The only bright spot was the narration.
