About this listen

Winter is roughly two months out. The time limit has been set.

But the Empire's military leaders are fiercely divided on what to do. Should they conduct aggressive offensives in hopes of a break through, or should they weather the winter and use that as a chance to reorganize, restructuring the lines of battle? In the end, they decided that while they gather supplies for a theoretical offensive, they would conduct an investigation to collect intelligence. Naturally, Tanya's Salamander Unit was the first candidate for the mission. Should they push ahead, or should they hold their ground? There's no time to hesitate. As the hellish conditions worsen, the war shows no sign of slowing down or becoming any less brutal. Everyone has no choice but keep what they hold dear close to their hearts as they march ever onwards toward the battlefield. Everything for the sake of the motherland, for the fatherland.

wonderful!

an absolutely splendid addition to the series.
it's very much more of the same, with not too many big changes, but considering how many more books there are in the series that's to be expected.

this volume really let us get a look at how Tanya can lead larger groups.... even when that group is more inept than what she's used to.

it also leads a bit more into the political aspect than we've seen in previous books. (including a deeper look into the generals)

I really enjoyed this one. I kept asking myself how is this going to play out. Very well written and performed.

I feel like laughing evily

This book was not as good as the other ones as it's mostly setting up the next one. this las 2 chapters got me grining evily. I think the next book with the winter war and the federation devided is going to be fantastic. They are also hints of the unified states getting involved with a possible "ship sink" like it happened in WW1. Overall I am excited for the next one.

Good addition but differently a slow build for the next book

Good story and a lot does happen some key moments in her growth and ability to commend bigger units as well as dealing with loss that said it feels kind of slow compared to the other books as it builds tension for winter war

Desperate Measures

I love how realistic the Empire is about fighting a massive war in the east. They have to resort to creating allies instead of finding ones haha

Verbose and Repeating

I always enjoy the general idea of these books, but man can the author bang on sometimes. By the end of this book, I felt like I had just spent ten hours listening to someone trying to sell me on their religion while repeating the same things over and over again in the hopes I will believe them the fourth or fifth time. In short, the writing is anything but tight.

With that said, I do appreciate the thorough look at each side's viewpoint in this big mess of a war. It does a good job of showing that enemies are people just like us, and that there is a distinction between a country's government / military and its people.

But regardless of its good points, I'm taking a break from this series because, frankly, it's becoming a slog. I almost feel like I've been on the front for years myself after reading it.

Second verse same as the first

The politics continue to be the most interesting part, everyone acts intelligently but (not)Germany continues to act flawlessly
Any scenes from Tanya’s POV are tension free since she continues to never make any serious mistakes or suffer setbacks
Scrubbing Nazi influences from the invasion of communist Russia seems icky
