About this listen

Where were you the day the Turning happened?

It was a phrase that meant nothing…until it did.

Because about four weeks ago, the world simply turned. One day we had iPhones and GoPros, Mickey Mouse and hamburgers. The next day we had magic and monsters.

And us humans? We became players with levels, items, and classes. Pretty ironic considering how many times my parents told me to “quit gaming and experience real life” while I was growing up. And then real life grabbed us by the balls, and it was the gamers who were prepared.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. You probably want to know how I managed to get to level 13 in a single day. How I mastered the art of Eternal Flame and Absolute Zero. How I managed to summon a gigaclops and tame a tarasque.

But perhaps you’re more interested in legendary weapons? Perhaps I can tempt you with a tale about how I forged the ancient Frostcaliber and used it to slay the lich king. Or if Leon Kennedy’s your kind of guy, I did save the president’s daughter, but instead of zombies, it was bloodthirsty apes.

But if none of those are your thing, how about just a simple tale about a guy, his best friend, a loyal golden retriever, a little girl, and her beloved cat? Practically heartwarming, right? Well, all except for the copious amounts of gore.

It's not bad

A little too corny for me, but I finished it. I'll not be getting the next one though. Also the narrator was a bit overdramatic. Not sure what it is but some narrators just sound super cringy when they try to get serious and dramatic, and this is one of them.

Good start for a new series.

End of the world turns to monster battles and power upgrades! The hero versus the evil overlord! Can’t wait for the next one!

Fun, but shallow and full of coincidences

Overall, I had fun—especially the first half of the book. The characters aren't deep, and the plot is pretty light. Overall, I had fun and don't regret purchasing it, but I'm not in a hurry to listen a second time. The performance of the narrator was strong.

Good but one issue

I really liked this book. Characters are great and the humor is perfect. Only thing is there are a couple time skips near the end it just feels like the author had a place and things he wanted to get to in book one, so he just threw in a couple time skips to move the plot forward , it felt kinda jarring.

Enjoyable

Light read. Good jokes/puns. Clean enough for the kids to listen to. Good narrator

Teen boys wet dream of the Apocalypse

The story reads like its a teen boys wet dream of surviving the apocalypse. The main character is not only over powered but is handed everything they need to succeed as it is needed. They never face any actual danger or suffer any loss. There's no excitement in seeing him succed.

The supporting characters are disappointing. From the geeky bard friend who only knows one song to all of the female characters, with the exception of the five year old, being a predictable bad ass fighting sex object.

The story line has huge questionable plot holes that break the suspension of disbelief. Like the shear number of deaths in the first couple of days to a week. In a population area in the Millions there is less then 100 living humans encountered in the whole story. Thats less then 0.0001% of the population... in less then a month and without the mass carnage you would need see to make it believable.

Plus how is it in a state where 1 in 20 citizen own a firearm and the capital of our country where specialized military personnel and has stockpiled weapons is the main character the only one who seems to be able to use a firearm to survive long enough to get a class and level?

I would not suggest this book

good but not great

I was very excited about this book in the beginning and even pre ordered it because it really felt like my kind of read. it actually started out pretty darn good! our mc goes through the beginning of the apocalypse with a cool and calm attitude (as a real badass should) he fights and kills a freaking dragon and in doing so gets an awesome dragon shifter class that sounds op af (which I absolutely love op mc's and hate pathetic stupid accident prone weakling and cowardly mcs) then he goes on to fight orks trolls and centaurs kicking ass and taking names in the first day in this novel and reaching level 13. then the action just quietly slips into a coma and dies. almost like turning off a light switch it was that sudden. now I'm about 2 hrs from the end and kinda peeved. I thought this was going to be a novel about kicking ass, and getting epic loot. the only epic loot so far is a freaking tea set and a baseball and bat from a famous baseball player which both suck and are ar boring as they sound .
