About this listen

Will’s journey from naïve apprentice to a mature wizard is almost complete, and his ever-growing mastery has reached unseen heights.

But his power does not exist in a vacuum. His rising star threatens to eclipse the existing powers and a new balance must be found, one that either accepts his primacy or extinguishes his light.

After Will’s resounding successes in the war with Darrow, the king plots to eliminate his young rival. Driven to desperation, Will is forced to negotiate for scraps between four brokers of power:

An ancient lich driven by vengeance, the fae queen—to whom all are just pawns in a deadly game, a nervous lord of Hell—because Will may have killed his predecessor, twice, and a primal beast—feared above all.

With mortal enemies as his allies, Will must survive to face the king...and the deadly secret he plans to unleash. Ancient foes have risen and the final battle has begun. With the world hanging in the balance, king and wizard clash, but only one can wear the Wizard’s Crown.

Great

I think the book was great with a lot of plot changes and one heck of a surprise. I do hope there is more after this, it feels like there's more.

Wait though...is this really the last one?

was this really the last book in the series like so many reviews have said? assuming this is not actually the final book in the series I say it's definitely still worth a listen for sure and to ignore all the hate this is getting as a final installment.

*semi spoilers ahead*

because to me this seems like the midpoint empire strikes back bad guys win moment of the overall narrative. taken with that frame of reference it totally works out fine. yeah It ends on a god awfully depressing note, but a story where everything always works out is boring. maybe that's just me though

Best in the series!!!

I could not stop reading. This book goes to dark places but it is all worth it. I hope that the fiction gods let there be a book 6.

Misery's End

I love this series.
with that said, the ending of this book hurt. It was a slightly open ended way out. But what was painful were the events. I felt a connection to the characters, which is a great sign, and by the time all of the characters' mistakes came to fruition it was a glorious train wreck.

I love the story, and this was a very reminiscent to the ending of Gurren Lagann. All pain, but pain we all saw coming.

Michael Manning, You made a hard choice and I come into for it.

Sincerely,

Virgil Allen Moore

No Happy Endings Here

I disagree with the reviews that say this wasn't true to the characters, but I think most people want a happy ending for the characters they've come to love. You will not find that in this book. That said, it is well written except for the end which wraps up a little too quickly after the last battle.

It is worth listening to in my opinion.

Horrible ending

Like many other reviewers I hated the ending. It felt like the author didn’t care anymore and got super cynical and negative and just wanted to never deal with these characters again. I don’t need a happy ending to like a book but this ending fundamentally changed who the characters were and I wish I’d stopped with book 4. If Manning came out with an alternate ending book I’d read that, but am otherwise done with him as an author. If he doesn’t care anymore then I’ll move on.

Boohoo bunch a cry babies 😭 GET OVER IT ALREADY!

I love this series !!! This was another wonderful edition!! Please Ignore all the rude comments and complaints! I’ve reported a lot of these comments because they’re unnecessary and they also give big spoilers and that’s not what these reviews are for. It’s a way to give your opinion. It’s not to tell people what happens at the end of the book and ruin it for everybody because you don’t like the way it ended. However, unfortunately it takes weeks sometimes for them to remove comments and reviews that have spoilers etc !! I almost didn’t read these books last year because of rude reviews and spoilers, but I chose to ignore them and I read the series anyway! I ended up loving them! Michael Manning is a wonderful author and I can’t wait to read his next series! So please people ignore the reviews and form your own opinion. Even if you didn’t like the book, don’t spoil it for everybody else.

Wizards crown.

The ending was so dumb it kept me awake feeling anxious and irritated. Great story line, just a stupid ending.

Great final book! Does not disappoint.

I'm not sure why there are so many haters in the reviews! I thought this book followed true to the prior books and my only one complaint is the same thing other people have said about the narrator. As amazing as this narrator is--I thoroughly enjoyed him--it was frustrating that for a large section of the book he was mispronouncing the Queen's name. Otherwise it was well written, engaging, and If you liked the first four books, then definitely finish the series off!

Felt Rushed

in my complete candor; It felt like the publisher ran over budget for this series. Forcing the author and editor to cram the last three stories into one last book. This last book lacked the fun little details that showed more personification of the characters that really tied the books together. Like the food descriptions and the small practical jokes the characters would play on each other.
