About this listen

After 25 years serving as the human Monitor of the Interstellar Ark, Hermes, Orion is scheduled to be placed back into hibernation with the other crewmembers.

Knowing he'll die there and be replaced before the ship's voyage is over, he decides that he won’t — can’t — accept that fate.

Whatever it takes, Orion will escape Hermes and see what's beyond, even if it means defying the regulations of his only friend — the ship-wide artificial intelligence known as Dan.

From the Washington Post and number one Audible best-selling duo, Rhett C. Bruno and Jaime Castle, comes a harrowing science fiction short story that will leave you questioning exactly what it means to be alive.

Powerful

This Long Vigil is a powerful tale about life and death and the human spirit. I was sort of depressing, but the end more than made up for the sad parts. This story makes me appreciate life and want to make the most of every, every minute.

Good short story

This is a very good short story with a great narrator. Would love a prequel to this one.

Fantastic short story

Not much to say about this, It's a fantastic 1 hour science fiction short story that takes place aboard a generation ship written in a way I haven't seen before. The amazing narrator Ray Porter only adds to the already high quality of the short story. Highly recommend.

Powerful story

For a short story there seems little I can say that wouldn't spoil your enjoyment of discovering Orion and his situation on this generation ship. Bruno and Castle perform their usual magic with characters and crisp writing that makes us feel what's happening and both dreading and hoping for equally possible outcomes. Porter is his usual outstanding self as well, with narration that continues to fit perfectly with my expectations for great scifi audiobooks.

The Riddle of Life

I own and thoroughly enjoyed the early version of The Long Vigil, so couldn't imagine what would be different with this one. But it was like going from condensed to expanded versions - this version has so much more detail, explanations as to how things aboard ship with cryo work, and I really felt like I got to know and empathize with the main character more. Loved this book!

Amazing short story!

This is such a great sci-fi short story! It makes you think and is so beautifully touching. It made me cry in less than an hour. The heartfelt narration is incredibly well done and really makes you empathise with Orion.
