About this listen

Tressa Middleton made UK history when she became Britain's youngest mum in 2006 aged just 12 years and eight months. Her case provoked shock and outrage - but the truth behind the headlines was far sadder than anyone could ever have imagined.

Born into a life of poverty and neglect, Tressa was forced to grow up fast when was she taken into care at just four years old. She was returned to her mother's chaotic world, but by the age of seven, she was being abused by her own brother and at 11 years old she fell pregnant with his child. For years she kept his dark secret in an attempt to hold her family together until the truth threatened to destroy her completely.

In the years since the birth, Tressa has gone through more pain and turmoil than most adults experience in a lifetime - yet today she survives a brave, strong and compassionate young woman. Now, for the first time, Tressa Middleton tells her own harrowing yet poignant story - a story of hope, forgiveness and, above all, love.

Tragedy of Birth

The tragedy of being born into such gross dysfunction.
While the language was not always appreciated, I presume it was accurately depicted.

The story is worth knowing in the sense that in general it is not unique and there is much suffering in this world.

How common is incest?

I felt so sorry for all the children from this family. It seems that they didn’t stand a chance to make good decisions from the example the parents set before them the drug and alcohol abuse seemed like a normal occurrence in their homes. I just wanted to scream tell somebody when the sexual abuse began. Children fall prey to adults manipulative lies because they don’t know any better. A disturbing content

Powerful Story & Great Way to Understand Some Foster Youth’s Struggles

While I’m not in the same country, working with foster youth in different settings and being a foster home it is so sad to hear this story and know it’s a reality for some many with backgrounds like hers. Foster youth are at a huge disadvantage for being abused & high pregnancy rates. Many turn to the streets, gangs and drugs for love, acceptance, and numbness.

This ending doesn’t always happen for those that had so many hardships as she did but I’m so happy to hear it did for her. The struggle and loss of innocence of her youth is so sad but the healing journey she went on proves we can be resilient and create a better life for ourselves & future generations.

Extraordinary storytelling

Tressa is an amazing woman who has overcome so many traumas and hardships. The details take you right there with her into her young mind and perceptions. She is so honest and hard on herself. This book was included in my membership because I love memoirs, and it had me hooked from the beginning. I couldn’t stop— and, as an American, I hadn’t heard of her— so I looked up articles about her so I could read more and follow up on her life.
