About this listen

A "heartbreaking, heartwarming" (Heidi McLaughlin, New York Times best-selling author) love story that asks the question: What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend? If you're Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane's in the military and away for long periods helps - but when tragedy strikes, everything changes. After Rachel, pregnant with her fourth child, dies in a car accident and the baby miraculously survives, Kate upends her entire life to share parenting duties. Then on the first anniversary of Rachel's death, Kate and Shane take comfort in each other in a night that they both soon regret. Shane's been angry for a year, and now he feels guilty too - for sleeping with his wife's best friend and liking it...liking her. Kate's ability to read him like a book may have once sent Shane running, but their lives are forever entwined and they are growing closer. Now with Shane deployed for seven months, Kate is on her own and struggling with being a single parent. Shane is loving and supportive from thousands of miles away, but his homecoming brings a betrayal Kate never saw coming. So Kate's only choice is to fight for the future she deserves - with or without Shane...

Can’t get enough

Everytime I’m in a book slump, this is my go-to re-listen and re-read. How I wish we could get another book with Kate and Shane.

I just loved the narrators!!!

The narrators usually make or break the audio book and 80% of the time they ruin the audio book for me. It was so now the case with this audio book, both narrators complimented each other and made the story that much better. I just closed my eyes and let their voices take me through a roller coaster of feelings.

Roller Coaster of EMOTIONS

OMG, how do I even begin?!?!?? Well, first I loved that the story was told in both Kates and Shane's point of view so we could get into both of their heads and also figure out or try to explain why Shane was a dick throughout most of this book.😫 He cut down Kate DEEP💔 a couple times that I had a hard time even contemplating forgiving him and I think if it hadn't been for the kids Kate would have walked away a long time ago.
I felt bad for her because it seemed her best friend Rachel used and manipulated her for her own needs and Kate put up with it because she was the type of person that when you have her love and friendship she'll go above and beyond even if it's at her own expense. Kate was just a genuine person 🤗 who always put everyone first before herself.
I was happy she gave it to Shane and didn't put up with his attitude and gave right back to him, she was no doormat!!
This was a real roller coaster ride of tremendous ups and downs that's what made this book so very good and a 5 star rating for me. I just wish we had more time at the end for hea moments between Kate and Shane! 😍
5 rating for me. The dual narrations were fantastic and they did a GREAT job!!

Heartbreakingly good love story

Narration by Charlotte North and Alastair Haynesbridge was really good.

Kate has been in love with Shane since she was a girl. Kate is loving, giving and understanding. Shane meets and eventually marries Kate’s best friend, and Kate basically puts her love life on hold. When her best friend dies, Kate puts the rest of her life on hold to take care of the children.

Shane grew up in the foster system. His friendship with Kate ended when she got too close and he hooked up with Kate’s best friend. He is in the military and is off gone on long deployments. After his wife’s death he is forced to interact with Kate, something he avoided during his entire marriage.

The relationship grows between Shane and Kate. The motivations behind each person’s actions becomes more clear as events in their pasts are revealed. The story is a love story with a HEA. However, I loved how the story showed how healing and redeeming love can be as well as the power of forgiveness. Highly recommended!

Shane, Shane, Shane!

This guy was a straight up trip. This was a pretty good book. It made me very angry; any book that can illicit this much emotion has to be good. It’s hard to believe anyone would be this much of a doormat. The narrators did an exceptional job bringing the characters to life.

Angst, loss, regret, and anger meets HEA

This book is told with dual POVs and narrated by Alastair Haynesbridge and Charlotte North (Audible neglected to mention her as a narrator). The narration itself was very good. Alastair and Charlotte were great at making each character sound unique so the dialogue was easy to follow. They also succeeded quite well at intoning characters of the opposite sex.

It was hard to like Shane. He was just so angry and unappreciative. Katie was this selfless wonder woman who took on the thankless job of a replacement mother for a family of 4 children. From the start of the book, I loved Katie. She was so strong, but wow did she take such abuse from Shane without a fight. I respected her for taking the high road in her confrontations, though after time I wished she could verbalize her retaliatory thoughts and stand up to him. Of course, Katie eventually does just that but it takes a while.

The romance...smoldering looks built up the angst and when Shane and Katie got together, it was definitely hot and sexy. Those interludes were few and far between, but I prefer more of a plot and story than repeated romps in the sack.

I fell in love with Katie's family of adopted brothers, sisters, and cousins. They were such a tight if somewhat unconventional family unit. I loved Katie's fiercely protective brothers - especially Abraham (Bram). He fought back against Shane when Katie couldn't and/or wouldn't.

Speaking of Bram, he gets his own story in book #2 of the Unbreak My Heart Series. Change of Heart follows the relationship between Bram and Anita. This audio book includes a teaser chapter of book two.

Overall, this book was credit worthy. I laughed and cried and am interested in continuing the series once it is available on Audible.

Fantastic!

I always read reviews before I jump in because I don't like cheating, love triangles, and find reverse harems hard. I almost didn't read this because of a detailed review that stated the MFC was a doormat through to the end.

That couldn't have been further from the truth. Kate was strong and she always spoke up. The situation was tough from the beginning because Shane was gone on deployment and didn't have all of the information. There were kids involved and just some history that needed to be sorted. Kate was so honest with her feelings and the refreshing thing is Shane knew about them, he just wasn't ready. Yes, he was a total dick to Kate quite a few heartbreaking times but make no mistakes their love was beautiful and so was the way this story was told.

No cheating of any kind, no RH's, and no love triangles.

This is definitely a book I will listen to again and again.
