About this listen

As the daughter of a renowned War Hero, Shaya was destined for a life of heroism and glory. A life she desired more than anything else—until her mother sacrificed herself for the cause and the very Empire she died for stole Shaya’s dreams from her.

Cunning and resourceful, Shaya worked hard to keep her and her brother safe, clawing themselves out of a system set against them and gaining the power they needed to find their way in life again.

Now, she’s achieved the first step of her dreams: she's been accepted to the prestigious Imperial Academy of War and Magic. In order to become the best gods damned Warmage around, all she has to do is overcome the Imperial system that wants to see her fail and control the demonic blood in her veins that wants for nothing but rage and violence.

...but hey, every obstacle is an opportunity to exploit–if you’re willing to think smart and work hard.

A excellent story..

It's a amazing story. Progression is solid understandable and it lay a little bit for the characters and if it's the world. Besides all that, it was entertaining to listen to read and ponder about. Because the world is engaging and rich. It's an amazing story for its pacing and character development.

Took a chance and was pleasantly surprised

I will try to be spoiler free with this review.

I usually don’t go for books with little or no reviews, but I decided to check this one out after being disappointed by another magic/wizardry series. While the book does not break any major ground on the sword and sorcery department, the magic system is easy to understand and is unique enough to be pleasant to learn about. The focus on the heritage of characters and where they get their magic from is done very well.

I was most surprised to find myself rooting for the main character fairly quickly once she makes it to the magic school. While the book has some of the typical magic school tropes involving cruel nobility, it is written very well and does not take away from the immersion. The main character has understandable emotional reactions to provocations, but she still responds in a smart and thoughtful manner. There were several moments that I had a good chuckle over and where I was impressed by the main character’s foresight.

The world building is not as environmentally unique as other series like Millennium Mage, the focus is more on the heritages of past and present divinities. The progenies of the different divinities have unique appearances and personalities that made me interested learning more.

While the book doesn’t have the uniqueness of other magical school series like Mother of Learning, I would still say that it is a solid read and worth the credit.

A compeling story.

Good lore, interesting plot line and story. I dont really like academy stories but this one does it right. Interesting magic system. I'll be following this series.
