About this listen
Calorie information is ubiquitous. On packaged food, restaurant menus, and online recipes, we see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume. And we treat these numbers as gospel: counting, cutting, intermittently consuming, and, if you believe some “experts” out there, magically making them disappear.
We all know, and governments advise, that losing weight is just a matter of burning more calories than we consume. Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about: All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today are wrong.
In Why Calories Don't Count, Dr. Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight. Once you understand that calories don't count, you can begin to make different decisions about how you choose to eat, learning what you really need to be counting instead. Practical, science-based, and full of illuminating anecdotes, this is the most entertaining dietary advice you'll ever find.

Story
In an age of misinformation and pseudo-science, the world is getting fatter and the diet makers are getting richer. So how do we break this cycle that’s literally killing us all? Drawing on the very latest science and his own genetic research at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Giles Yeo has written the seminal “anti-diet” diet book. Exploring the history of our food, debunking marketing nonsense, detoxifying diet advice, and confronting the advocates of clean eating, Giles translates his pioneering research into an engaging, must-read study of the human appetite.

Story
For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

Story
Glucose, or blood sugar, is a tiny molecule in our body that has a huge impact on our health. It enters our bloodstream through the starchy or sweet foods we eat. Ninety percent of us suffer from too much glucose in our system—and most of us don’t know it. The symptoms? Cravings, fatigue, infertility, hormonal issues, acne, wrinkles. Drawing on cutting-edge science and her own pioneering research, biochemist Jessie Inchauspé offers ten simple, surprising hacks to help you balance your glucose levels and reverse your symptoms—without going on a diet or giving up the foods you love.

Story
Most diet books teach you to set short-term weight loss goals. Whether low-carb or low-fat, the typical plan goes like this: restrict your food choices, exercise until exhaustion, and swallow stacks of supplements. These “solutions” do a better job of lightening your wallet than lightening you. Meanwhile, the healthcare industry fails to prevent chronic disease. Rather than showing people how to remain healthy and prevent illness through proper nutrition, the system offers drugs and surgery to manage symptoms.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

Is it possible to eat well, drink wine, and still lose weight? Melanie Avalon is living proof that it's not only possible, it's unbelievably simple and straightforward. It's all about the what (mostly paleo, but she's not a monster about it), the when (believe it or not, brief fasting can mean freedom rather than restriction), and the wine (red wine can be a secret bullet for weight loss - who knew?). It's a combination that Avalon discovered after years of self-experimentation and intense research on the mechanics of body fat regulation.

Story
If a piece of individually wrapped cheese retains its shape, color, and texture for years, what does it say about the food we eat and feed our children? Former New York Times reporter and mother Melanie Warner decided to explore that question when she observed the phenomenon of the indestructible cheese. She began an investigative journey that takes her to research labs, food science departments, and factories around the country. What she discovered provides a rare, eye-opening - and sometimes disturbing - account of what we're really eating.

Recent cutting-edge research shows that human intestinal microbiota influences metabolism, appetite, energy, hormones, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Because gut microflora plays a central role in weight management, losing weight is much more than cutting calories, fat, or carbs. When the trillions of live bacteria in our digestive tract - the gut microbiome - are balanced, excess pounds melt away, and we feel revitalized.

Patience does not pay off
Unfortunately, this book fell flat. I listened patiently to get to the author's thesis, including lots of deep biochemistry that ultimately didn't matter. I didn't get anything of value from this book and the title, as others have said, is completely misleading.

Informative and thought provoking!
I truly enjoy when authors narrate their own books; as well are able to convey the passion for the the subject in such concise detail as found in this book.

Informative, But Slightly Meandering
This book is a great "zero to hero" course that introduces its readers to the very detailed history and mechanisms surrounding the calorie, as well as a reliving of my AP Biology class in high school. The first part covers some pretty dry stuff, but I admit that it's essential for a base for the more discussion-based latter half. The second half was more interesting for me, where Dr Yeo dives into interesting topics that I can relate with such as diet, processed foods, and societal inequalities that stem from food.
The information provided in this book is legit and fairly easy to digest. Dr. Yeo has that children's book author energy, Inserting some quips and punchlines here and there to keep the delivery of the content fresh. Sometimes though, he would start talking about a story that does connect back to the main topic but takes too long for me to stay focused. In that light, the quips and zany jokes do become more cheesy than cute. I don't blame a man for trying though.

Mostly a boring lecture
The vast majority of the book is like a lecture on how and where we got the Term "calorie" and its many complexities.... just boring with no real world applications, the book is full of useless knowledge not worth remembering.
In Summery
1. a calorie is a calorie
2. eat less and exercise more.
3. Our understanding of food and how our digestive system works is a fairly new thing that is combobulated with everyones opinion.

Excellent book but no PDF available
This is a very entertaining science-based well researched book about nutrition in general and calorie specifically, and highly recommended. Audible does not have a PDF linked to the book, and this is frustrating because the author directs the listener to the PDF probably a dozen times………

Lots of math and chemistry…
To much math and chemistry for a lay person to understand. Three or chapters could have been sum up to say it all comes done to eating enough protein and vegetables.

this book was great to help me recontextualize my thoughts around food. I just wish it actually came with the PDF. That's my only complaint. I loved the reading. It made it highly enjoyable.
