About this listen

Join the urban fantasy series that has people raving!

Out of the smoldering ruins of the war in heaven Archangels Raphael and Michael cannot believe the agreement made between God and his morning star, Lucifer.

Unwilling to either destroy the fallen angel or leave him with a free hand upon the world, God sets in motion a struggle that will span the millennia from creation to present day.

Two Sentinels are invested with the ability to bend the laws of creation to their will and each represents the primal forces of order and chaos. Throughout the centuries, Micah ben Judah has shouldered the burden of keeping legions of unnatural creatures in check, but no more.

The time has come for Raphael to renew the Sentinel’s power in another. He has found that successor in current day Atlanta.

Kellan Thorne never thought he would ever have an angel come knocking. Sarcastic, irreverent, and prone to fits of profanity, Kellan is more at home making obscure references to Doctor Who and Star Wars than religious introspection.

His life will change forever as the veil between worlds is torn free and he is placed at the center of a war of angels and demons in which he may be the biggest prize. Kellan must accept the power and burden of his own free will, but can Micah and Raphael keep him alive long enough to decide?

Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Thoroughly enjoyable and quite funny. Reading this is the most fun I've ever had with my pants on. I can't wait to begin the second book in the series.

A hell of a debut!

I love this narrator! Perhaps this also explains why I kept getting "iron druid" vibes? (btw, shame on audible for making those unavailable in the US!) Maybe it's the glowing tattoos? Maybe not though. The author is obviously inspired by others... there are lots of nods to pop culture and other authors. The one that comes to mind now is Harry Dresden-a Jim Butcher character from one of my all time favorite series, "the Dresden Files". There are also some parallels with the main character, Kellen. They both have a close group of friends that are like family. They are both fiercely protective of that group .Both have younger girls they love like little sisters, both have vampire friends, both have traffic with angles and demons... you get the idea. I don't know for sure, but it feels deliberate. Either way, there are enough differences that it is new and enough similarities to be appealing to me. I enjoyed the puns, nods, and references immensely. It makes me feel like I'm sharing a personal joke with the author. I can't wait to see if Hamish will come into book 2. He's a hanger on character that could be Kellen's quirky friend like Waldo Butters, or he could fade into obscurity. Scottish? Red haired? Maybe he's related to Shannon?

Entertaining and fast paced.

This was an enjoyable listen. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was that it seemed like some chunks were cut out of the plot. I felt like there were at least another few hours worth of story that should have been included in this book. I assume the author will address these missing parts in future books, but it made the plot pacing and the depth of the story feel too fast and a bit too flat in the second half of the book.

Still well worth the credit though.

Good book

I bought this because I'm a fan of Nick Podehl's narration, and he didn't disappoint once again. Not only that, but the book was very good in it's own right which made me doubly happy. There's a lot of religious iconography in the book, but it doesn't push any beliefs on the reader other than maybe don't be a dick, and I applaud the author for walking that line (with plenty of profanity to boot). On to the next.

Surprisingly good

Not my typical book, I tend to veer away from religious themed books, but this was refreshing good and captivating. I have already purchased book 2 in the series and am excited to get started.

I personally like the perspective, but it is atypical for SF/Fantasy. Get past the intro for the real book.

In this book, God is real and takes an active role. But it's not a peachy book, except that Robert Ross seems to get on a soap box about how swearing is ok if you are a Catholic. Ah, well, I guess most authors have idiosyncrasies. Interesting plot lines, not too dark. Great narration, wish the cover art wasn't so eye-smashing.
