About this listen
When your parents are pathologically self-centered, manipulative, or emotionally abusive, the pain they cause is deep and often difficult to put into words. You may experience anxiety, depression, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), low self-esteem, addiction, or other mental health conditions as an adult. But it was not your fault, and there are tools you can use to heal the trauma caused by your childhood.
This compassionate guide will help you gain a greater understanding of what happened in your past; transform deep pain into emotional resilience; and build the loving, meaningful relationship with yourself that you deserve. You'll also learn to set boundaries with others, assert your needs, and overcome emotional avoidance to develop warm, loving relationships with others.
Author Sherrie Campbell offers powerful skills drawn from a range of evidence-based treatments, including mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), self-compassion, lived experience, and body-based practices to help you heal from the past and reconnect with your authentic self.
Let this book guide you on the path to healing, wholeness, and self-discovery.

Story
But It’s Your Family is a remarkable account of what it means to cut ties to toxic family abuse and thrive in the aftermath. Loving someone doesn’t always mean having a relationship with them, just like forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. Reconciling, in many cases, only sets people up for more abuse. A significant part of healing comes with accepting that this is a part of life; there are some relationships that are so poisonous that they destroy one’s ability to be healthy and function best.

If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met or dismissed—and you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, and abandonment. As an adult, you have fought hard to establish your own sense of self, and heal the wounds caused by your upbringing. But what about other emotionally immature people (EIP) in your life? As an adult child of an emotionally immature parent (ACEIP), you may be particularly vulnerable to EIPs.

Do you feel like your relationship with your parents is always bringing you down? Do they blame you for their problems, for being a thorn in their shoes, always endeavoring to make you feel like the most massive burden? Abusive parents tend to share common traits - they are constantly negatively reactive, lack empathy, are extremely controlling, always critical, and continuously transfer blame to you. Story
Those who have had a narcissistic parent can testify to how damaging it can be to one's psyche. Narcissistic parents lack empathy, show a severe sense of entitlement to micromanage the lives of their children, and often subject their children to neglect, as well as emotional, psychological, and physical abuse. From the unique challenges daughters of narcissistic fathers face to the ways in which adverse childhood experiences affect our brains, Shahida Arabi's insightful essays resonate deeply with those who have been raised by narcissistic parents.

Story
It’s not always easy to tell when you’re dealing with a narcissist. One day they draw you in with their confidence and charisma, the next they gaslight you, wreck your self-confidence, and leave you wondering, What could I have done differently? As Dr. Ramani Durvasula reveals in It's Not You, the answer is: absolutely nothing. Just as a tiger can’t change its stripes, a narcissist won’t stop manipulating and invalidating you. To heal in the aftermath of their abuse and protect yourself from future harm, you first have to accept that you are not to blame.

Story
Many emotionally abusive behaviors from parent to child have become socially acceptable because of the way we repeat things our parents said and did, things passed down from generation to generation that persist today. You're Not the Problem enables us to recognize these behaviors and realize the profound impact they have had, and still have, and to see the patterns they form in our relationships with parents, partners and friends. It also shows us how to heal on a personal level but also on a societal level.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Felt words were given to my experiences
this is one of the better books that I have listened to on the topic of narcissistic. /emotionally abusive parents. The author has a unique perspective as being someone that was emotionally abused by their own parents and also has a background in psychology to uniquely help others on this path. I found many times that I wanted to highlight or come back to what was being said as a way to share with my spouse, the things that I felt encompassed my experience that I had not been able to find words for previously. A lot of tips and tricks for moving forward and not staying stuck in abuse were given. I'm really glad I have this audiobook in my library as I will be listening to it again. my only gripe was during the part that the author said to do everything you can to get to know yourself better including astrology. This doesn't align with me and it took some of the validity away from that portion as a belief system not science. Overrall, I do think that the book is worth reading and shouldn't be dismissed for this small segment.

Validation
There are no words to describe how important this book is. Alas, I will attempt to find them...
Dr. Campbell is intrinsic to providing understanding pertaining to emotional abuse and C-PTSD. The information in this book would be incredibly beneficial to our world if we were educated on these topics growing up. I consider this a textbook for healthy parenting, how to overcome inadequate and abusive parenting, identifying abuse, and the tools to discover the survivors' true self.
I sincerely believe every person on earth would benefit from listening to, or reading this book. She has provided me with the perpetually sought validation and insight on the chaos I've experienced since literally the day I was born.
I can't thank you enough, Dr. Campbell.

incredible insight
I wish I had this book 50 years ago, I come from an emotional abusive dysfunctional family, this book has validated my feelings, experiences etc.. it's the most freeing feeling to finally be honest with myself, we were always told to never speak of what went on in our house , it created an enormous amount of shame & guilt inside me, there were 6 children in this family and 3 of them took their own adult lives, the inner trauma that we endured was horrific, I made it out when I was 18 but never really left emotionally till I was 37, I finally had enough, I'm 68 now and I have spent decades working on loving myself, it's amazing how as an adult you invite people in your life that treat you the same way your parents did, but I have to say Dr Sherri Campbell is our voice & a brave soul, I am in awe of her research and i thank her so very much for writing this book!! this will help so many people to change their life, there is power in knowledge and there is power within us to change the narrative and start living the life we deserve and this book will definitely do that
