About this listen

In this important sequel to Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, author Lindsay Gibson offers powerful tools to help you step back and protect yourself at the first sign of an emotional takeover, make sure your emotions and needs are respected, and break free from the coercive control of emotionally immature parents.

Growing up with emotionally immature (EI) parents can leave you feeling lonely and neglected. You may have trouble setting limits and expressing your feelings. And you may even be more susceptible to other emotionally immature people as you establish adult relationships. In addition, as your parents become older, they may still treat your emotions with mockery and contempt, be dismissive and discounting of your reality, and try to control and diminish your sense of emotional autonomy and freedom of thought. In short, EIs can be self-absorbed, inconsistent, and contradictory. So, how can you recover from their toxic behavior?

Drawing on the success of her popular self-help book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, author Lindsay Gibson offers yet another essential resource. With this follow-up guide, you’ll learn practical skills to help you recognize the signs of an EI, protect yourself against an emotional takeover, reconnect with your own emotions and needs, and gain emotional autonomy in all your relationships. This is a how-to book, with doable exercises and active tips and suggestions for what to say and do to increase emotional autonomy and self-awareness.

If you’re ready to stop putting your own needs last, clear the clutter of self-doubt, and move beyond the fear of judgment and punishment that’s been instilled in you by emotionally immature parents, this book will help you find the freedom to finally live your life your way.

Practical solutions. Awful narration.

This second book on emotionally immature parents is more solutions focused. I still recommend listening to the first book. It has been helping me deal with my mother. The narration is awful though. The ladies tone goes up and down that becomes distracting. You may want to purchase the physical book.

Hits home

As an adult who comes from a childhood where I had 2 EI parents that were divorced, plus a EI stepdad, this book really hit home.

I’ve read Gibson’s other books and they were just as helpful. I loved how this book gave examples of specific instances that an adult child would run into when it comes to EI parents and how to handle it.

For the low grade reviews about this book, my personal opinion is that those readers either never had experience with emotionally immature parents before and were looking for an actual parenting book — in which case this is not it — or they were weren’t taking it for what it is.

I loved this book and plan on applying it to my interactions with my emotionally immature parents that I still have contact with.

Helped me out so much

This book has helped me out so much. At one point before this book, I was feeling like I was going crazy and the on at fault. That my mother’s actions were because of me. I feel much more confident. The only problem I see is that most of this advice is for those who have already moved out of their home and away from their parents. However many of us are adults and still unable to leave home. I was hoping I’d hear advice regarding that

Great narration, practical and focused.

The narration voice was read with warmth and assertion which strengthens the content of the book. The content itself is practical, the language is simple but yet focused. Highly recommend this book.

Life changing

I've never heard my relationship with my mother laid out so explicitly and accurately. Thank you for giving me the language to voice how I've always felt and new language to set boundaries. This has altered my perception of myself and the love I deserve.
