About this listen

What happens when your relationship no longer feels like the one you said "yes" to?

Couples therapist Dr. Tracy Dalgleish has spent the last seventeen years dedicated to helping hundreds of couples in distress find hope and healing, sometimes by staying together and other times not. Breakdowns in communication, lack of intimacy, infidelity, overbearing in-laws and exes (to name a few)―she's seen it all.

Shortly after the birth of her first child, Dr. Tracy suddenly began to see herself in her clients' narratives. Despite the overwhelming joy she felt as a new mother, she also found herself welling up with anger and resentment toward her partner as she began shouldering more than half the domestic load and childcare labor in their marriage. In time, she found herself uttering the very words she'd heard countless times in her office from her clients: I didn't sign up for this.

Part memoir, part self-help, Dr. Tracy Dalgleish's debut book provides a rare look inside real therapy sessions with four couples―and into her own marriage. With unflinching candor and heartfelt empathy, she digs to the root of the issues that fuel our day-to-day relationship conflicts and illuminates the common struggle of what it means to be human: the incredible difficulty of showing up wholly and authentically in our most intimate relationship with others and with ourselves.

I’m not an avid book reader or listener (thank you, severe ADHD). I prefer podcasts over books, any day. Every now & then I come across a book I can’t put down. This is one of those books. I listened to the entire book in a single day. I knew I had to leave a review when I applied some advice given in this book in my marriage the same day I read it & I had the best day with my spouse we’d had in years. I don’t think that was any coincidence. Thank you Dr. Tracy Dalgleish!
This book is now one of my favorite self help books I’ve ever read. I felt like I was in a one on one therapy session with a world renowned therapist who spoke all her knowledge into my heart & soul, then sent me out into the real world to apply it & heal myself & marriage. Dr. Tracy Dalgleish presents many different conflicts married couples face & proves conflict isn’t only unique to that marriage. We all face conflict within our marriage that others can relate to. Dr. Tracy offers real life, simple explanations of how we can let one simple feeling snowball into a marriage ending, then she gives real world advice on how to heal your marriage by working with your spouse (or even working alone, if they’re not willing to put in any work yet). I cried happy tears throughout this book. I felt like I wasn’t going crazy, a bad person, the only one experiencing this type of hurt in a marriage. Most of all, I felt like I was given hope. This book is written using simple terms & simple explanations to describe complicated feelings in our lives. If you’re struggling in your marriage, for any reason, I promise this book can help. All you have to do is listen to/read it with an open heart. You’ll know what to do as you read on through the pages of the book.
BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE & GOD BLESS!!!!

This book has the capacity to heal so many people & their marriages.

Wonderful and insightful, it's about couples going to therapy and their journeys to overcome some of their struggles. The author also talks about some issues presented in her own relationship and reflects how she goes about them.

Would recommend to anyone who is interested in the topic of relationships and self development.

This book was so beautifully constructed. It felt like a mirror helping me to process my own relationship plus a guideline going forward. It should be compulsory reading for anyone in relationship. Highly recommended.
