Publisher's summary

Experience the vast tapestry of After Earth in a novelization unlike any other: a 1,000-year saga featuring original content from the mind of Peter David, the veteran sci-fi author who helped develop the movie’s richly imagined world. This is the complete, never-before-seen chronicle of the extraordinary family that’s been across the universe and back - from humanity’s last days on Earth through the events of the epic film!

Raige runs in the family....

General Cypher Raige of the United Ranger Corps is only the latest in a long line of heroes. For 1,000 years, ever since the globe was engulfed by environmental apocalypse, the Raiges have been instrumental in humanity’s survival. They led the way as the survivors abandoned Earth, settled a hospitable planet called Nova Prime, withstood an onslaught from a mysterious alien force, and carved out a new home in the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

Now Cypher has returned to his family after an extended tour of duty. For his 13-year-old son, Kitai, tagging along with his famous father is the adventure of a lifetime - and a chance to salvage their relationship. But when an asteroid collides with their craft, they make a crash landing that leaves Cypher seriously - perhaps fatally - wounded.

Kitai Raige has always wanted to prove that he has what it takes to live up to his illustrious name. Now, all too soon, he gets his chance. With his father’s life on the line, Kitai must venture out into the strange, hostile terrain of a new world that seems eerily familiar: Earth.

Adapted by Peter David; Based on the screenplay by Gary Whitta and M. Night Shyamalan; Story by Will Smith.

Father and Son

Despite the negative reviews I see this as what real story not so much of Science Fiction as many seam to only see, the "plot" background as in "time or place" is how the son and father come together or connected as Natures should be.

Men upon adulthood and of the responsibilities men assume, Marriage and of children, continuation of the species the strength of the Human Species is the "love" that binds us together and is the clear link of our existence.

Father not just of his biological but of the rest, protector, provider and leader, otherwise the "colony" destroyed. Mixed also of the bond of Father/Husband abandoned?! I see much of this story similar upon myself and others around me. I too a "job" of many years removed from the home and estranged from my own, great as of a Wife/Mother here, wise of and direction also "her" responsibilities of guidance and counsel women should have as both are needed or Human Species eliminated.

Great book

I never knew there was a book along with the movie. I loved the movie, but it (the movie) was confusing in parts. I never thought I would understand. this book is so much like the movie, but with more understanding of what was going on. I highly recommend this book. it shows a struggling kid who wants love from his father. And how he finally gets the acceptance at the end.

Great narration, Poor writing

The story concept itself was good, and the narrator did an excellent job of making the audiobook bearable, but the writing of the book version of this movie seems as if it was a first draft that bypassed the editing department and went straight print with no quality checks. Written entirely in passive "telling" language rather than active "showing" language it seemed extremely amateur.

Like I said though, because the narrator was good I was able to get through the story. Kudos to David for making poorly written story work, says a lot about your skill and narration career ahead.

loves it

much better than the movie because they could get into the past and world building. it didn't have to be all action all the time. in fact id love to see a series of books about this universe

This is a movie script not a book.

I saw the movie then listened to this audiobook. Apart from the flashbacks this is the dialogue from the movie verbatim. It wasn't that good. I was disappointed both in the movie and the audiobook. Good idea, poor story.

Book was better than the movie

I liked the movie will smith and his son did a good job even if it did receive poor ratings, I thought the movie was pretty good but the book was a little better. Not only do you learn a little more about the sister but also their ancestors and the screll, the enemy that is sending the ursa to kill them.
