About this listen

Humanity is tired of losing. Enter the mech.

Jake Price has always dreamed of joining the Darkstream military like his father before him. When he’s told his gaming scores are good enough to qualify him for a brand-new training program designed to find recruits talented enough to pilot humanity’s first mechs, he can hardly believe it.

He’s right to be doubtful. There are hundreds of other recruits competing for the same eight jobs, and they’re all as skilled as he is. Worse, the training instructor is an unhinged chief with a particular dislike for Jake.

But Jake refuses to give up, refuses to wash out, because humanity is facing its greatest threat yet. If someone doesn’t step up, it could all be over for the human species.

It’s Mechs. What more do you want?

I loved this series. Lots of action and a well put together story. Highly recommendable.

Pretty good but got a bit long in the tooth

I couch this review with the fact that I finished the entire main story first so, perhaps if I had jumped over to the mech wars at the right time (somewhere in the middle of the main story) it would have been a better experience. As it is though, I just thought the series as a whole was fine but the Quatro seemed a bit 2 dimensional actually most characters just seemed to lack some of the depth I felt we got from the main series.

Predictable but still fun

it was fun to read but kind of predictable as it moved along. I ended up getting into this series after I started the legacy series

Unsatisfying ending

I listened to all 4 books. The expectation was that this was the entire story. However, the ending had way too many details that were not resolved. I fully realize that this technique sets up future books. However, this can be done in a way that resolved the plot details more fully.

Helped me to better understand the Ixan Universe!

Mark Boyett is outstanding as the narrator with a multitude of voices and I loved how this series of books helped me understand the characters and subplots in the Ixan Universe better.

Decent Sci-Fi

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this title in return for an unbiased review.

I thought this series was decent sci-fi. Definitely not terrible, but not amazing, kind of average.

Narration:
It had a little bit of white noise in the audio which was noticeable at the start but did not bother me too much as the books went on. The narrator did a good job, was easy to listen to, and I always knew which person he was voicing. He is not among the top narrators, but definitely not on the bottom. I quite enjoyed him.

Book:
As far as the books go my biggest complaint is that it is advertised as four books when in reality it is one book in four parts. I really enjoyed the Mechs and watching what their capabilities were. There were no major plot twists, I enjoyed the little bits of world-building that were in the book.

It goes on the list of books that I could read again if I'm in the mood for some generic sci-fi.
